Default 1986 LRB GT Resto Mod

Finally had the time and nice weather to take some pictures.

Forgive the fact that she is a little dirty. I'm working on replacing the t-top weatherstrip (pass side is now complete) and don't want to wash the car until the weatherstrip is done and it doesn't leak.

Here's a shot of my 3 4 eyes. I only just realized this, but a majority of my cars over the years have had quad headlights, weird. Anyway

    Now for some GT shots:

    Pulled bucktag

Bought the car back in July and after some shipping SNAFUs it arrived in early August. Car is a joy to drive, sounds great but needs more power.

I've been working on small things or pressing issues, but my plan is to eventually do a full resto-mod. Including a full repaint (same color).

So far I've changed the oil, got the parking brake working (rear disc set up), replaced speedo cable and VSS, driver's side door pins/bushings, got map light working and resprayed it with grey vinyl (it was green ), replaced pass side weather strip (including door run channels) and adjusted pass side glass, power door lock bezel and power window bezel (both cracked and about to fall off). Installed new t-top latch seals, belt line weather strip, firewall to hood seal, and tag light lenses (they were cracked and falling apart).

I've also started taking care of the few small spots of surface rust here and there. Right now I'm just hitting them with the stuff that stops the rust and seals it. I've touched up a few areas too, but I haven't decided what to do about the large area of paint flaking off the roof yet.

Most pressing items are the driver's side weather strip (door/t-top) and the heater core. The core isn't pouring out coolant yet, but I do smell a slight hint of coolant with vent open or heat on. I also need to fix a very small leak at the water pump. The pump was replaced a few hundred miles before I bought it, so I'm hoping it's just the seal.

Thanks for looking and I'll update as I get more done.

Thanks. I fell in love with the color and had just had to have 1 in Light Regatta Blue.

Looks good, came from up this way (Mass), right?

Love the color - LRB is not something that you see very often.

Yeah it was in MA. Originally bought in PA, Hershey I think.

I'm loving it so far. Enjoying both driving it and working on it.

I'm an idiot. My wife was talking to me about something green as I was typing.

Anyway, I love the cream with the grey.

    Arrived today:

Now to clean them up and make them look new.

I also think I'm going to upgrade the steering. I don't like the vagueness it currently has.

I tightened up the bolts for the tilt mechanism Sat, that made a huge difference but I still can turn the wheel a few inches without moving the wheels. I don't like that.

Probably see if I can find an 03/04 Cobra rack and go with a MM steering shaft.

Good find on the FL covers.

Maybe the rag joint (steering) is on the way out....

I just snagged another set of Marchals on ebay for $39. They need a little work, but I'll take it!

I checked the rag joint the other day. It didn't look bad, but it def could be the problem. I figure the MM steering shaft will fix that issue. Since the rack would have to drop to replace the shaft, might as well install a new shaft too!

    Thanks, it's my favorite too!

Is that a FMS decal across your windshield?

(can't get your album to load up right now)

Yes it is. I used part of a Ford Motorsport decal/stripe that was sold in the catalog in the 80's.

    Marti Report arrived today.

    Report

Few interesting facts on the car. I grew up less than 30 miles from the dealer (Keller Bros) where the car was sold. I was 11 when it was bought. My parents have a good friend who was a salesmen at Keller Bros when this car was sold. I'm in the process of finding out if he sold it.

The dealer is still in business so in the near future I hope to visit the dealer and get some pictures of the car on the lot.

A few items have been showing up recently...

    Evaporator
    Front door run weatherstrip

Refurbished cluster mileage adjusted to reflect original cluster mileage.

Can't see it but mileage reads 96098

Noticed a lot of heat coming up through the e-brake handle slot in the console.

    "Well there's your problem!"

    New seal has been installed.

Also pulled out the old shift boot.

A new Redline shift boot and e-brake boot will be installed when everything goes back together.

Tore the heater box out today to replace the heater core and the evaporator.

Hard to see but the core was leaking at 1 of the corners.

Evaporator doesn't look bad, but figured might as well replace it since I plan to replace all the AC to go to 134 in the near future.

Amazingly the drain was not clogged. There was a small amount of crap in there.

New parts ready to go in. Waiting on a few odds and ends first.

Wow, been away for a little while, didn't realize it had been so long. Anyway, lots of progress to report.

I pulled out the old sagging headliner and well worn visors in favor of new ones. While I was doing that I went ahead and pulled the greenish-grey dash out and redyed it. I think both jobs turned out quite well.

    Headliner:

The pic is deceiving, those are reflections on the driver's side, not wrinkles. The headliner turned out excellent.

    Visors:

Here you can see the newly dyed dash pad, white gauges, and new leather boots (more on those in a minute):

Close up of the dash pad and the dash hull:

I think the color is a close match, the pad is a little too shiny, but for my first time dying something I am happy with it. I may see if I can dull it a bit.

As I mentioned above, here is a shot of the shift boot and e-brake boot installed:

Picked them up from RedlineGoods and I have to say they are really nice. I'd like to pick up a set for my other vehicle.

I also decided to ditch the Kenwood head unit in favor of a JVC one. The Kenwood didn't sound right and had some issues. I'm happy to say the JVC unit is much better.
