That car was in pretty poor shape. Not much Saleen left to it. You did a great job. Thanks for sharing the story and pics. How about letting us know how you made the headlight covers? I would be interested in knowing what you used and how you went about it. I'm sure other people would be interested in that as well. Thanks for the info.

    RichV,

It might be the fastest full blown resto you have see in here.

I found this Saleen up for sale in Jan. 2010. I made deposit in Jan to hold the car for 2 months, in March we picked up the car. Between March to Sept. I collected all the parts that the Saleen needed for full resto. In Sept. 2010 I pulled the engine out of car and started the progress. In Jan 2011 the resto was completed.

From the begin to end I spend same amount as black Saleen 86-049 was for sale and it was in need of resto.

Your old #97 looks a lot like mine. Im not going to let it go for long time.

    Curtis,

When Saleen was new and sold in Los Gatos, CA near San Jose and grew up in northern Cal. When the owner bought it was already in that condition in Stockton, CA in 2005 and he drove it around his block then parked it and it sat there until I bought it. He collected many Saleens and he was planning to resto all of his Saleens but he never got around to it.

    Bull-vette,

I have no problem sharing how I custom made the headlight covers. First of all use cardboard cut to fit in your headlights. Just need one piece of cardboard cut out that can be flipped over for both headlights. Then get clear Lexan plastic from Home Depot. I traced with black marker from cardboard on the plastic. Once you do that you MUST put masking tape on the line where black marker is so it wont crack when you cut it. I just used a jig saw and used a bench vise grip to hold the jig saw upside down and leave it running, you just take your time to rotating the plastic to the shape you need. I used the black rubber seal from any spare hatchback deck lid under the rear glass. The seal is hard to put on so I put it in hot water and boiled it for 5 minutes. It turn so soft and very easy to put it on the lens. I made the bracket out of metal and painted it and put some double sided tape to hold the bracket.

I can't believe that is the same car! Outstanding work!

I saw that car a few years or so ago on a craigslist ad and thought it was close to being written off! Nice save!

I am the one that sold Dan the car, after I bought it, and just let it sit doing nothing but neglect it more. I am just amazed every time I see it, he does incredible work. I had 5 86 Saleens back in 2005, 177 was the roughest, and the plan was to build it into a replica of one of the 1986 Saleen race cars. I guess luckily I never got to it, and it is now all back to original. I still have 85-0015, 86-0102, 86-0156, 86 SSP coupe, and a 86 GT T-top. I have always loved the 86 Saleens since I was lucky enough to drive one all the way through high school. I currently have a 1991 Mustang GT that has been and open track car since new, it will be getting the full 87-89 Saleen race car treatment in the near future.
