So, I've been chipping away at my to-do list on the 82. Installed the sun visors:

Next up was the radio. Someone hacked the dash:

But the harness was in tact. I had in my stash an AM/FM radio from an early Aero car. So I used it with a custom / modified dash bezel:

Using a factory radio allows me to also use use factory connectors. I only needed to add a constant power and ground connection to get this radio to work.

Then I finished installing the rest of the dash (pad and gauge bezel)

I need to refinish the steering wheel spokes and get the center cover back on.

    ^^^ Thanks all!

Good question Mark. I'll pull it out and just sand just the metal part of of the steering wheel and simply repaint in semi-gloss black. The outer leather-like part of the wheel is still in good condition. I have the center cover, just need to glue all the layers back together.

Still chipping away at some of the smaller projects. Since this car has the rear wiper option, it uses a cover under the hatch to hide the wiper mechanism. Tonight was clean / scuff / paint this cover:

Also cleaned up and painted the lug wrench (Ford engine gray paint)

Pulled the steering wheel out recently (what a PITA - must have been on there since 1982). I almost trashed my puller....

Anyway, here is the wheel on my work bench:

Close up of why I pulled it:

    Hand sanding sucks:

Next step is to clean it with some prepsol and hit it with primer / paint....

Your so close to being done Joe. I'm looking forward to seeing the steering wheel refinished and back in the interior. I bet it'll look like a million bucks.

    Thanks Dave!

Quick update - no pics, but....

I didn't have any Eastwood spray rust encapsulator / primer, which I really wanted to use on the steering wheel.

I was away all last week, so I ordered 3 new cans. Arrived today.

I'll get the wheel in primer tomorrow night.

Love Eastwood Rust Encapsulator and it works well. I am not sure it will be worth it on the steering wheel IMHO. The RE needs rust to work properly. It appears you have removed the majority if not all of it, so the RE doesn't have the rust to react with. Obviously you can use it to be safe, but not really sure it will help or change much. Not trying to be negative, just giving my .02. Good luck and I am sure the wheel will turn out great when you are done.

Thanks Trey, the wheel isn't totally rust free so that's why I wanted to use the RE instead of regular primer. I've had really good success with the Eastwood RE in the past.

Been very busy of late. I did finish up the steering wheel, need to install it along with the center cap. Hopefully this coming weekend:

I also picked up a set of TRX rims from SVO4PWR2:

Will be stripping off the old clear coat and refinishing these for the time being.

So, progress on the TRX front. I used 2 of the rims from the above pic, plus 2 others that I already had. One of my rims still had a junky tire that needed to be dismounted:

Then I started on the prep (yes, this one was painted white by someone in the past)

Used air craft paint stripper, works like a charm:

Skipping a bunch of steps, but here are the rims ready to be clear coated:

One of the center caps isn't in the greatest condition, still need to work on that one...

Those will look great once you are done Joe! Do you have rubber for them? Three years ago I contemplated finding and fixing up some OEM TRX wheels with the Coker repops. With the new 16" repros out now, I would have a hard time convincing myself to go with the metric ones.

My '82 GT originally had TRX to my knowledge. It's been 5-lugged so no TRX for it but I want to get a 16" TRX set to share between our 79 coupes.

Side question: I need to re-clear a rim or two on my SVO. Would over the counter paint stripper take that clear off? Thanks Joe!

The answer to your tire question is below. As for the stripper, I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work. You may need to apply more that 1 coat to get a full job.

As for TRX rubber, I'm pretty much good to go. I have this set of 220's sitting in a dry dark corner of my basement:

With good tread and no dry rot:

And I also have 5 of the 200 variety:

And in case I ever feel the urge to take it out in the winter, here is a set of TRX snow tires from my Pace Car (190's)

I also have a set of 15" mesh rims, the polished edge needs to be refinished:

So the TRX refinish project was going good except for the center caps. I picked the best ones I had, but almost all of them had dings / dents that looked like crap. So I've been able to take the aluminum skin off so I could smooth them out. Here is an example, first this center cap has a lot of small dings and even a crease:

Here is the aluminum "skin" separated from the plastic housing:

Once separated, I could use my body hammers carefully remove the blemishes from the back side. After a bit of work with the hammer, I sanded with 180 grit:

    Then onward to 220 grit:

Then on to a fine grit sanding block:

Tonight I'll mount this to my buffer / polisher with velcro to the pad and complete the process of final finish.

Thanks Rod, I haven't been searching high & low, but I don't see these offered (new or used) for sale, so I have to get creative.

Final installment before clear coat. Last night I used some velcro to mount the center caps to my buffer:

Ran the buffer around 2k RMP's:

And voila, ready for clear coat:
