After the filler dried enough, I did a quick sand 80 grit then 120 grit then 220 grit:

Tomorrow I'll spray a light coat of primer on it then apply the final (red) putty.

Front fender is done, this will get primered as well:

So the driver's side is basically done. Maybe this weekend I'll pull the car out of the garage and give it a good clean out....

Joe, what grit do you go down to before doing your top coat?

The {red} putty is sanded with 220 wet {or dry} depending on the size of the area.

Then I apply a final coat of primer which is sanded with 400 wet just before I start the paint process.

^^^ Thanks guys. Been busy with yard work so not much time on the 82 recently. But I did get it down on the ground and out of the garage. Let it run a bit and cleaned all the dust/dirt from under the car. Also used my leaf blower to clean off the car while it was outside:

Hey Mark, not much done recently, fall clean up and then holidays. I did get some work on the drivers side door jamb (sanded old paint / prime). I also did the same on the underside of the hatch after I removed the glass:

Hopefully the deep freeze doesn't last long so I can get some additional garage time later this week....

Always enjoy seeing your work - simply top notch! Glad to see that progress continues.

I'm right there with you, started doing some engine work recently and with this cold spell, can't drag myself into the garage to make any progress. I think the cold snap is going to ease up a bit.

Glad to see you're still at it. The weather lately hasn't been too friendly for garage time. My 05 has been sitting for about a month with 1/4 of the hood sanded down and 6 busted sparkplugs.... Maybe i'll get back to it tomorrow.

You do great work, sir! I like keeping up with this thread, there's so much to take in. I like the fact that you're keeping the rear wiper setup. Earlier in the thread I thought I read that the original hatch was toast. Looking at the latest pics it looks pretty nice. Did you find another with the wiper?

Yes this hatch is from a 79 PC that also had the wiper. Just lucked out on that....

Ok, so I never realized that there is a difference between a 79 hatch and an 82 hatch. Somewhere along the line (prob after the 79 model year), they changed latch mechanism and also the mounting points. Learned this when I grabbed the latch from the old hatch and it wouldn't work with the new hatch. So out came the cutters and welder.

Here is the hatch after I opened up the hole a bit.

Cut the mounting area off the old hatch and welded, pic after grinding (I'm a better grinder than welder....)

More info to follow. Still need to apply a small amount of filler to the bottom area around the latch. But hopefully this brings to a close the use of the welder on this car....

    Once again "Problem Solved"

Have to really Love those "Running Changes " that Ford (as well as All the OEMS to a lesser degree ) has been known to slip in from model year to model year.

    Great work as always.

Well, it's not exactly easy to find decent hatches in this area of the rust belt. So I tend to work with what I have.

Thanks Ed, always something. Hopefully that's the end of the welder work.

Finished it up over the last few nights. Skim coat of plastic filler, sand, primer and voila!

Started working on the pass side door jamb back in March, didn't get too far....
Anyway, I did finally finish up sanding / priming the pass side jamb and inside of the door. Not much progress, but progress nonetheless.....

Earlier this week I was able to get the door and fender back on the car:

Oh, and I pretty much got rid of all of my extra seats, so earlier this year I dug out the aero seats that I bought for this car many moons ago. Seems my cat enjoyed them for a time or two....

Fortunately they did clean up really well.

Post #5001..... Well, Trey is making great progress on his 82 and it's given me some motivation. Now if I could only find time. I did make some headway. About a month ago, I "fixed" the rear bumper support with some galvenized angle bracket that I picked up at HD:

I needed that bracket to mount the rear bumper. I had a spare that I put on the car last night, but wasn't happy with the fit:

So I went back to the original:

It fits better, but the bumper top is wavy. Not sure I there is much I can do with it. I may try a heat gun later to see if I can get it to lay flat. If not I will just have to live with it....
