    Default Needing 10's

OK everybody I need to get into the 10's without breaking the bank.

    1979 Mustang coupe
Car weight is 2950 lbs with driver

    Nitrous is not an option.

I'm running 408w 9.8:1 compression less than 1000 miles on it
    Comp Cams XE282HR cam
    Victor JR heads 77189
    1.6 roller rockers
    Weiand Stealth dual plane intake
Holley HP 750 Carb my afr is 12.5 crossing the line.
I believe I have the carb dialed in for max mph
I have not checked my vacuum at the top end of the track
    VP MS109 - Unleaded Fuel
Total timing 36 degrees all in by 3500 rpm
    Meziere electric waterpump
    14 x 3 K&N air filter closed top (no clearance for 4")
C4 transmission 3200 converter no transbrake
    373 gears
Mickey Thompson et drags 28x10.5 slicks

Tried a ram air with no change in mph or et

    Here's my timeslip breakdown
Flashing the converter off idle at 3500 rpm and shifting at 6000 rpm
    60ft 1.60
    330ft 4.55
    1/8 mile 7.07 at 97.11 mph
    1000ft 9.27
    1/4 mile 11.14 at 119.82 mph

    I'm thinking of changing
    my rockers to 1.7
    850 carb
    410 gears
I could lose some weight. Car and driver

    Thanks

    What rpm are you trapping?
Gears could help if your not spinning the tires yet.

Maybe reduce unsprung weight? What rims?

    maybe a single plane intake.
I see dual planes more as a street intake.
I think you get better a/f balance in all cyl with an open
    plenum single plane.

Have you tired running it with a little less timing? Good flowing heads usually require less timing for max power!

Your time slip is interesting to me...I went 11.4@118.34 with a 1.57 60Ft...typically my 60's are 1.57 to 1.6 in the 11.4-11.6 range at 118...

So with you going 119 and the 11.19, I'd think that was a really really good hook - and it was - don't get me wrong but I would have thought a 1.55 or better...

Another example is my dad. He was going 1.55-1.58 60's and going 12.0@111-113 - THAT was hooking.

Perhaps it's the automatic trans that's messing with me - either way here are my suggestions...

    • Slightly shorter tire rather than the gears
    • Have you tried playing with the timing yet? There might be enough left for the extra couple of tenths??!!! Car might even like less timing
    • NO air Filter (just for the track of course!)
    • What's the suspension look like? Coil Overs, Lightweight K-member etc etc

Good luck and keep us posted

Agreed single plane manifold like Vic. Jr. would help out here.

Compression is pretty low to begin with, I would run a Vic jr whether Im on the street or at the strip. Need more fuel for the 408 too so start with the 850 and go from there. Cam is pretty small for those cubes too and a gear change should be in your future.
Yep my **** is coming apart again... Isnt life great!

Have you tried a lower-octane fuel? Dad's old combo has consistently gone faster on regular 87 than premium 91, perhaps the 109 is too much for your relatively low compression motor. Cheap trick if it works. I also concur on the Stealth intake as a possible restriction, a Victor Jr. would be a solid choice here. Sounds like a very streetable combination, not too nasty but plenty of power!

too much octane for that compression.

You need to get your 60ft time down.

I read that the cam is on a 112 lsa, if so that is an efi cam.

If it is installed straight up, I would try to get it advanced at least 6 degrees.

If you want to replace the cam, get something on a 108 and add 10 degrees duration to it. Keep it installed at a 104-106.

That should get you out of the hole much better. Won't cost you much either.

With the dual plane, find a way to get a 1-2" open spacer under the carb. That should be worth about 10hp to the tire.

If you can't, make sure the divider in the plenum is cut down.

Try an 850 last, but it should improve things.

I say this a lot, but get that thing on a dyno for an hour. You would be amazed at what you can find out.

    What rpm are you trapping?
    5800 to 5900 rpm

Have you tired running it with a little less timing? Good flowing heads usually require less timing for max power!
My best et and mph came after I bummed the timing up 1 degree

So with you going 119 and the 11.19, I'd think that was a really really good hook - and it was - don't get me wrong but I would have thought a 1.55 or better...
The car does 1.54 1.55 60ft. The tracks prep isn't always the best nor is the driver.

Too much octane for that compression.
My buddy who is a svt tuner told that after I dump the MS109 in.

I read that the cam is on a 112 lsa, if so that is an efi cam.
I think the biggest problem with my setup is I was looking for a street/strip car at the beginning and had planned efi in the future now I wish I hadn't gone that route.

If it is installed straight up, I would try to get it advanced at least 6 degrees.
    Setup at 4 degrees

    Great suggestions everybody
    Thanks

keep the gears and try a 26" tire that should get you close to the 4.10 ratio

9.71% converter slippage. that's not too bad

4 degrees on the gear or 4 degrees on the degree wheel?

I'd say you're doing pretty good. .5 sec and 2mph faster than me in the 1/8th with a seemingly milder engine combo.

i run 49degrees on my 408 and it loves it. i guess each motor likes it diffrently.

i ran into this problem my first time at the track. had a 110 holley fuel pump, and an 850 carb but it was cutting out like a mother,,,, then i realised i needed to change the pickup and fuel lines... if you have the v8 from the factory your lines are big enough to run fast ,so it prob is way less obvious than my problem, i had the 4cyl lines. and they were kinked and my sock was black as coal. my shop is changing out to 3/4 in the tank, and necking it down to 1/2 inch line all the way to the front. I am hoping this will stop the cutting out and stuttering above 4k rpm. I am doing mine street and strip, I have 308 gears, I aint expecting anything magical but i know my motor is wicked strong. and it should have made it faster than 14.2,,, but even as sick as it was it spins my street tires off.

another thing you can do is rip out all the dash , heater core, everything ,and sheet metal it. my buddy did it, that and the passenger seat was over 60lbs. every little bit helps.

Either 4:10's or shorter tires, (If you lived in Pennsylvania, I'd swap you tires: I am running out of RPM's with my 26 X 10 ET Drags) A solid lifter cam would help too! You're knocking on the 10 second door. Won't be long. Good luck

Still have the heater, full dash and door bracing. Pretty sure I could drop 100lbs. Good for 1/10th
