OK old thread, but I've got to clear this inaccuracy up There is no such thing as a 289 Hipo 4V manifold. The manifold used an a K code engine is EXACTLY the same manifold used on an A code 4V 289.

K code is right. It was the parent of the de rated D and A code regular and premium fuel engines.

In Mercury's Clientele, the racing guys tried to use the production 271 HP 289 engine, but it was nixed by Lee I.

For Mercury versions, the K code was a D code hydraulic lifter engine unless it was a covert C4 trans solid lifter engine. With the K code Hi Po carb, but no thined timing chain, 170 gram harmonic balancer swage or upgraded solid lifter cam. The ignition varied. Mercury got no K code 271 Hi Po engines, despite there bring a K and D code option. The K code were generally hydraulic lifter engines, but some D codes were almost K code Ford Fairlane and Mustang spec.

The K code solid lifter 289 Hi Po was first, a true 14.6 second engine in premium fuel Fairlane Sport Coupes and repudely, Mercury compact mid size Clientele's, with factory heads that in the first year had flow rates and valve and chamber sizes little better than the 1980-1982 255 2bbl.

Yet the 4bbl intake, camber ccs and cam and free flow exhaust and dual point ignition and very light weight with the high weight transfer of a big XK 200 platform made these cars Pontiac GTO pre-daters. The problem was always the low production from having to modify the crank balance and source a better Brinel hardness crank and block from production parts. There was a limited budget for all Hi Po 289s, hence the low numbers.

Ford had production problems with the 271 hp engine. For 1964, a regular gas D code predated the 66-67 A code 289 as well.

The 4bbl intake was always an OEM 63 D or K code intake. Mercury and Ford had different VIN codes for engines in 1963.
