Thread: Rear axle fluid

  1. #1

    Default Rear axle fluid

Trying to make the '84 SVO roadworthy... it seems reliable and runs well enough at this stage, but it's not the smoothest ride at highway speeds. The only fluid that hasn't been changed at this point is in the rear axle. It looks to be a stock 7.5" and the oil was pretty worn out. I have some Mobil 1 75W-90 LS GL-5 gear oil... does that sound like it'll work well in the back? I've searched and it looks like 75W-140 is recommended as well.
    '89 LX Sport: 8.5:1 306, KB 2.2L supercharged, methanol injected, Tremec 3550, 3.31:1 gears, big brakes, EDIS8
    '71 Mustang: 10.3:1 408 stroker, 4R70W w/3000 stall triple disc converter, 3.50:1 gears, caged, girdled, injected, EDIS8
    '79 Bronco: 8.5:1 400, EEC-IV control, EDIS8, C6, 4.11:1 gears, 4" lift, 35" rubber
    '00 Mountaineer: stock 9.15:1 302, 4R70W, all stock

You will also need some friction modifier for the trac loc

The Mobil1 gear oil I have says that it has the additive already in it, so I'm thinking of not putting any more in.

    This is the stuff... http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/..._75W-90LS.aspx

Not sure whether I'll need to add any, but let me know your thoughts.

Seeing that you've got some older Fords as well, what gear oil do you run in them? I have a '79 Bronco and a '71 Mustang, both with 9" rears. The '79 has 31-spline axles and 4.11:1 whereas the Mach 1 has 28-spline and 3.50:1. Both have US Gear billet steel trak-loks installed.

I am a firm believer on mobil 1 that is some good stuff and I always use the ford friction modifier I believe the motorcraft part # is VC-7

I like Mobil1, but their formulation has changed recently to conform to current standards. I also like Redline a lot. I use it exclusively in my motorcycle and a supercharged 5.0 of mine. Excellent quality stuff!

Dropped in the Mobil1 75W-90 LS synthetic in the diff last night. Went for a spirited ride and felt a difference! It also quitened up the ride by a lot... who knows when the last fluid had been changed.

No, I didn't end up using any because the Mobil1 stuff has the friction modifier additive already added.

I tend not to believe oil companies
And I would have put it in anyway - rebuilding the trac lok is a pain.

I strongly advise getting some and putting it in or you will be rebuilding the trac lock in the near future
