    Default 1979 Hood Bumpers

Does anyone know where to get a set of good/new set of hood bumpers for a 1979 Mustang.

The fenders (which are original as far as I know) on my Pace Car only have the rectangular opening for the bumper. They are larger than the openings on my 82+ Mustangs.

The PC fenders also do not have the half circular shape at the one end of the slot to slide the later model hood bumpers into.

I had never noticed it until today, when I tried to install a new set of hood bumpers that do not fit correctly no matter what LRS says.

    Thanks!

    What no love?!

Am I the only one that has run into this issue? If that is the case, then my PC must have one off prototype fenders on it that will make it more valuable and collectable!

So who wants to make the first offer?

Seriously, my guess is that I need bumpers off a Fairmont or something instead of the normal Mustang hood bumpers.

The set that I bought from FMR a couple of years ago didn't fit my '79 either.

Well, I am glad I am not the only one, but disappointed that we are all in the same boat!

I guess its time to start doing some searching to see what I can come up with!

Same problem here. keep us updated if you find out anything. my hood shakes enough going down the road that it has chipped the paint on the corners of the hood.

Well, I decided to resurrect this old thread. I'm having the same issue and can't seem to find an answer. I read another similar thread from 2005 that has zero replies. In that thread, he explained that the bumpers were brittle and broke apart when he removed them. Same thing happened to me. I ordered new ones that were listed for 79-82, but they still didn't fit.

Has anyone ever found a solution?

I need to find some that stay in my fenders. Maybe check with NPD and see what they have. They have an original 79 coupe and a PC they can look at to verify whats what.

Sorry I forgot to update this once I figured it out. The 79 hood bumpers are first generation Mustang parts. I will have to double check but I believe they are a C5ZZ part number. I will try to double check this evening, but I did figure out they are different than any of the regular Fox hood bumpers.

Interesting! That means they "should" be readily available, since most parts for the early mustangs are being repopped.

I looked at pics of the 65-66 pieces and they sure do look correct. I'll need to order 2 sets, as I'm in the same boat with my 79 cobra. I actually tried to steal them for the pace car with no luck. I just added to my pile of crusty rubber bits lol!

Pic of hood bumper, my 79 Cobra. OE, never been replaced.
PS fender is original, no bumper slots.
Ds replaced in 1983. Has slotted punch outs for bumpers. Insert and slide.
Have one 71-73 wedge style bumper on it and one correct 79 bumper.

79 has split down middle design common to early Mustang.
67-68 Mustang bumpers close but look thinner.
80 up have solid mold no center split. Looks same shape as 79.

Ok, I think I was incorrect in the 65 model bumpers. I believe the ones I ended up using were the 69/70 models such as these.

I don't think they're 100% correct, but they did work for my PC. Someone with access to the 79 parts catalog needs to look up the correct part number. Odds are it's from another Ford vehicle and that is why no one seems to have the correct ones.

Our two 79's have the same as the one above from gr79. Well one still does after a fender replacement on one

I looked up the part number in my 73-79 parts manual (1989 final edition), saw the illustration, got to the part numbers and it had it as a 79 only. Buuut it had a superseded EOSZ 16758-A part number! It did not give the original number which they do for some parts and put the "R/B" beside the new.

The number given in my manual is for the 1981-93 typical one for the Mustang. I typed that part number as typical "D9ZZ" prefix and looked at images and lo and behold NPD had an image and I click and go to a part: C7AZ 16758-A

Looking into the part list for hood bumpers in my manual and this listed for 73/78 "L" vehicles - "on fender-wedge shape" (L = Pinto!!! )

    Now you know!

Mystery solved lol! Good job, 82GTforMe!

I just ordered them! Thanks guys for all the help. These early foxes are quite a bit different than what people realize.

    x2.
Now you know what the parts counter business can be like. And reminded about owning older cars.
Funny how it can be tough even being so many were made.

Our 4Es: flexible mix and match, use leftover, crossover production parts cars. One year, early or late.
One fits all can be good or bad if lacking full function or QC. Not so for new blueprinted non-generic limited production products.
Good that Ford used some off the shelf older parts. Frustrating when certain newer more available, possibly better, will not work.
Nice is finding parts, a few model years newer, may interchange. Or starting to be reproduced, or warehoused nos.
More catalogs being kept updated, more junk parts being culled, more accurate detailed info.
Help in the quest from keeping our cars out of the much more recent model throwaway/trade/dump category.

Found them listed in NPD 2019 catalog page 239, yellow box.
    1979- M-16758-2A
    80-93 M-16758-1A

Was curious why later but not 79 being listed under fenders or hood at online NPD site.
    Found them:
    1979-1993 Mustang, Weatherstrip, Underhood:
