    Default Factory battery & cable

I have an ugly NAPA battery in my car and would like to go back to what it came from the factory with for correctness.

What did the 85 GTs come with from Ford? I also need a new negative battery cable and the NOS on Foxresto are $199.99 for the carb version. A bit much for a battery cable, so do they make them aftermarket anywhere with the correct extra plug?

    Thanks, Rob

There may be a way to change plug ends (besides cutting and butt connector) with a little ingenuity. I have also never traced that wire back and see where it leads. Maybe you can replace it with the 87 and up wire so no one would ever know it has been done at first glance.

Just giving you some other choices.... I realize it doesn't answer your question.

    Default Battery

I have been looking for a correct 85 battery since 2000. I have only seen one in a car and he wouldn't sell it.

Repro battery cables are sorely needed.

    I have seen no alternatives.

What about the Motorcraft batteries on www.fordparts.com? I am thinking those would be as close as I am going to get to factory, but there are no photos on the website of the battery that fits the 85 GT.

Has anyone purchased one of these?

    Thanks, Rob

I just purchased one two weeks ago from a local dealership. Not many left in that size so I hear.

I just purchased the Group 56 Motorcraft battery from www.fordparts.com. Since there are no repros out there and I didn't want to do a splice job, I bit the bullet and paid the $199 for the NOS negative cable from Foxrepro. Very steep, but I guess that is to be expected with limited quantities for NOS parts and no repros on the horizon.

That may or may not bite us. When almost identical repros come out, the $199 cable becomes $50.

If you are not entering your car in a mustang national show, I wouldn't worry about it. No one is looking at a battery cable except the judge at the national show.... and some of us (of course).

I would love to have one, but my car is not quite ready yet for any shows and an 87 cable with a little pigtail modification may suffice for now.

But I am envious of you having the 85 cable. A++++++++++'s for you for buying it.

$199 battery cables are why I opted for a restomod vs full on resto. But contrats on your finding one.

I didn't want to deal with the battery & cable issue on my rest-mod either. I installed the later style battery tray, group 57 battery, and found Motorcraft cables to adapt. I could use the '87 & up ground because I am using the '87 computer harness that has the matching small ground pigtail connection. Since I am installing the ground cable on the passenger side, the cable to the block was really long. I shortened the cable and put new terminal ends on both pieces and ran the cut off section from the block to the frame where the other pigtail piece is connecting to also.

Here is the SVO negative cable:

Since most of my experience is with SVOs I'm not 100% sure if it is the same for V8s.

For this SVO cable it should be E3SZ-14301-A

The Motorcraft number should be WC-8541

I'm not sure about the V8 numbers.

    Default Battery Cables

Since the repros are not out there yet, there are some companies making custom battery cables. I see them out there at the big car shows. I am sure they can make nice cable for pretty much any application. It would be handy to know sizing ahead of time. I have not tried it yet.

The problem is the small connector on the negative cable. No one has those.

I am still surprised by some of the things that I have in storage.

This thread made me think of battery cables I bought many years ago (1999 actually) for my 85 GT IIRC. They could have been for an 86 GT I had also. I am not sure if the cables are same or not. I am sure one of you guys can tell me for sure!

    Positive Cable: Motorcraft: WC-8540
    Ford Part Number: E3SZ-14300-A
    Ford Engineering Number: E3SF-AB
    14300
    E7780 L8

    Negative Cable: Motorcraft: WC-8541
    Ford Part Number: E3SZ-14301-A
    Ford Engineering Number: E3SF-AB
    14301

The Engineering Numbers are wrapped around the cable so I posted the codes just as they look on the cable.

    Hope that helps someone.

From Ford's parts manual this is the following description that is given...

The WC-8540 is the positive for the 83-86 4cyl T/C cars and is 21" long 4ga cable

Then WC-8541 is the neg for 83-86 4 cyl T/C cars and is 32" long with a 6.5" ground lead

I thought i would post these, and this way everyone would be covered as far as part numbers for the positive and negative cables. Hope this helps!

    BTW
