    Default IMSA Mustang Pics

These are from the 2008 24hr race at Daytona. Each year they have a heritage exhibit and then run the cars on the track. Hope they bring this car back again!

I knew someone would want to see pics of the XR4Ti, unfortunately I don't have any more. I think I was in such awe of all the cool cars.

I do have a video with the all the cars returning from the track though, I will have to post it.

I absolutely love the Mustangs and Capris from the 80's! They looked awesome and sounded awesome on the track!

Although the bodies became less and less stock as the years went on, I still think they were some cool looking cars that looked like stock cars on steriods!

Here is a picture of the Tom Gloy Capri body panels that I picked up and hope to use one of these days!

You can see I have all the parts except the hood and the rear hatch. Everything is fiberglass and extremely light for the size of the flares.

As noted by a previous post, the quarters on the Mustang in the first photos does have the Capri sail panels. You will notice that on the early Mustangs from Roush they just replaced the nose and tails on the Capri bodies that they had raced the year before. You will also notice on some of the Roush car they actually still used the Capri bubble back with the same rear spoiler even on the Mustangs. Most of this varied depending on if the car was an IMSA GTO car or a SCCA Trans Am GT-1 car and the rules.

Please post up the video if you can. I would love to hear the roar of these cars again!

That's cool! I would love to see that body kit up close.

The body set up is similiar to the Roush Mustang at the beginning of the thread, but different in a lot of ways. Obviously the front and rear match the 87-93 cars. The fenders and quarters are flared about the same, but the door shell sits further out from the stock position so that makes the flares appear to be less.

The later model cars from Roush were designed as full tube chassis cars from the start so very little of the body is similiar to the stock Mustang parts. The earlier cars started out as stock chassis that were then modified for the flares, etc. You can see that the Mustang body in the ad has the roof skin also, which would have been the stock steel skin most of the time on the early cars.

The complete body for $3K is most likely a good deal from what I could see. If you were running an old IMSA GTO or SCCA GT-1/Trans Am chassis this body kit is exactly what you would want or need as a spare or complete rebody.

Found the web site for the company that owns the car:
    http://www.3dog.org/late_race.htm

    Hey Trey, this looks familiar:
    http://www.3dog.org/racecars/late_mo...cury_capri.htm
BTW, that is cool stuff. I don't have any body panels but I do have a crew shirt for that MAC Tools car.

    As promised, here's the video.

83GLX5.0, that shell in the ad is similar to this car:

Thanks for the video, that was cool!

I had seen 3 Dog Garage before, but didn't think to mention them. They have several of the old Mustang race cars.

If you check out this link I think the pictures are a little better.

    http://www.bangshift.com/gallery/ros...e-gallery.html

If you look towards the bottom you will see the Mustangs, Capri, XR4Ti, and others. You will also see a couple of older Mustangs chassis that are being restored. I would love to have the chance to tour their shop.

If you look at the Capri that is the same vintage as the body parts that I posted earlier. Someday I hope to either find a rear whale tail like the one on the Mustang (Very unlikely) or make one of my own.

I do love the old Trans Am cars! IMSA GTO cars too!

I fogot to add, cool crew shirt! I have always been a huge fan of Roush. I really enjoyed Tommy Kendal's reign there for a couple of years in Trans Am, especially 1997 when he won 11 of the 13 races that year.

Ford actually won all 13 races too!

The other item I was going to mention was, if you watch the video you can see the difference in the body panels between the Whistler Mustang and the Motorcraft Mustang when they pull into the paddock. The 87-93 body was a lot more squared off and angular. Personally I still love the 86 and earlier body myself. Either way they are cool cars to look at and even cooler when you can see and here them run.

Great to see all that retro Mustang Trans-Am racing stuff ... wow it sure brings back memories. I used to go to those races in the early mid 80's in Portland and Seattle and watch the Gloy and Roush teams do their thing. I should dig out my racing photo albums and add some photos here for your viewing.

If you find them definitely post them!

Here is an article discussing the car:

Also here's an interesting article about the 81 racecar:

Some great ford racing history, I'm glad I got the change to witness the first win for the FR500C in 05

There were a few issues tough, one of the cars lost its hood

I have a McLaren Mustang race car post card from Ford Motorsport. Its car number 02 and orange and black lower bottom. The back has this information:
The McLaren Mustang race car was built to demonstrate the performance qualities of Firestone's new HPR high performance radial tires. Powered by a 2.0 litre BDG Cosworth engine, the car is capable of a top speed of 150 mph. At the Daytona 24 hour race and this car finished 1st in the GTP class.
I also have a couple of AC Cobra post cards from Ford Motorsport.
