Ebay. It was in a bodyshop in Michigan. Its an NOS OEM Ford cover. I got SUPER lucky and found it for $110 bucks!! They had it listed as an 84 cover...but when I saw the pictures I knew that wasnt the right year...so I just kept my mouth shut....didnt tell him what year it was actually for...and bid on it! lol Went to Michigan and picked it up....so I didnt have to worry about shipping damage. I lucked out big time!

Even with the $60 speeding ticket I got. lol It was still SO worth it. I would have gave alot more to have such a nice cover.

Do 1979 Cobra front bumper covers swell?
    Dear Friends,
After 12 years I seem to have located a possible replacement for my swelling bumper cover.
Do Cobra bumpers swell like the Standard 1979 covers?
    Thanks for your help,
    Hans.

There's no difference between a 1979 Cobra front cover and a standard 1979 Mustang front cover. The 1979 Pace Car bumper cover is unique to the PC, but the 79 Cobra front cover is not.

The 1980/81 Cobra uses the same front cover as the 1979 PC as well as the 1982 Mustang GT. Good Luck!

My understanding for the standard egg crate non-Cobra 1979 front covers were changed mid-model year. Likely due to the poor quality urethane that deteriorated. I don’t know if the earlier 1979 Pace Car or Cobra front covers had the same issues.

Brought home a van full of four eye stuff. Including GT/ PC bumpers, side skirts, trailer hitch, 3 piece spoiler and lots of fasteners and harnesses.
It's pretty rough for the most part.
Thanks for your replies that really helped me.

I am not aware of swelling issues with the 79 PC front covers. I might be wrong, but I believe all the production Pace Cars are 4/79 and later production dates. So if anything they would be mid year production vehicles, I guess. I am not aware if the Cobra production was all year model long or if the Cobra production was phased in later in the year model.

I had a 79 that would swell up every time it rained but only after it was repainted. At the time (almost 30 years ago) I blamed the Dupont paint and vowed to never use that brand again. This is the first time I've ever heard of anyone else having this happen.
So is this a common problem for 79 cars??? It was a 4cyl auto coupe btw.

Yep, the early ones have this flaw. Mine is built in 10-1978, and the bumper indicates the seasons very well.

According to the 73-79 parts book I have, there were two.

D9ZZ-8200-C was replaced "3-1-79" by E0ZZ-8200-A. It does note "large side marker lamp opg." versus "small opg.". No mention of urethane upgrade too.

I wonder if that is the difference in 79 side marker lamp mounting methods. The early ones not having the mounting bracket on the header panel corresponding to the small opening. It also verifies that the cover you used from my car for the TM rebuild with the 1980 number was the original on my car which was built in May of 79. My book shows the 79 part number D9ZZ 8200D for the "Cobra, Indy, GT" cover, so it would seem this issue was unique to the standard version only.

Whoa!!! That is some extreme wrinkling. I hope my 79 doesn’t do that. Is it the wet only or wet with the cold weather?? I’d be afraid to wash my car lol

My current 79 wasn't quite as bad as this, but the one I owned back in 1981 was. I thought it was melting. Cold and wet seems to be cause. A few years ago someone from here coined the term MADS - Moisture Absorption Distortion Syndrome - to describe this issue

Default mod my 1979 front bumper cover?

Are ALL early bumpers this way? My car was built 11/78. And this will be the first winter with it however I live in a mild climate. My concern is that that the car will be painted in the near future and don’t want a bad bumper

Mine is built august or october 1978. Don't recall exactly.
So you are in the danger zone.
But only rain does this. In real cold wether its often freezing everything dry.
The bumper returns to its original shape when dried up. Either warm or cold.

I guess if the paint isn't broken by deformation of the bumper cover now (see my pics) it will not occur where you live?
Else hose it down to see what happens, prior to painting.

Can you mail some mild climate overhere? I got some Sea climate in exchange for you. Don't want to keep it all selfishly to myself.

I would send some if I could however I don’t want your weather in return! BTW we pay $$$ for our Weather Tax. Can’t stop being broke lol

On a serious note, I have washed the car twice in moderate temps and did not notice any deformities. Does it happen instantly or ??

There is some time delay. Not sure how long exactly, but it's some hours.
I tend to see the effect after the rain stopped.
And then it takes a day or 3 to turn back to normal.
It might take a lot of water, not one tiny bucket. To soake into the cover.
