Default what's this part of the car called?

It's almost time to begin the bodywork. This section on the driver's side is rusted out, whats the acually body term for this section? can I get the section new or just cut it out and weld some sheetmetal in?

had to replace the same area. i bought a new repop quarter panel. and cut it out in the middle of the trim line. then removed the bad piece cutting in the center of the trim line. that way when the mouldings are on, it covers up any evidence that a quarter was ever welded on!

thats a pretty good idea! So the panel "joint" (I'm a contractor and don't know the auto technical term), maybe seam..anyway, the molding covers the line huh? Can I do this without welding anything?

Thanks Ed! Can I get my hands on one without getting the whole quarter panel? or you think it's worth replacing the rear quarters as both fender lips are beat up anyhow? If I somehow wind up getting involved with this body work, the best I think I can do is Bodyfill the fenders anyway...

Do you need just the outer skin?

I have your piece. I can't find the pic now, or I deleted it. I will snap one tomorrow and show you, If you can use it, pay shipping

Perfect shot! That's all filler, no sheetmetal/welding?

No, its a sheet metal piece, its just wasn't sanded down when I took the pic. He took a piece of sheet metal, bent it to shape and replaced the old one.

ahhh! I just learned some of the process of body work... weld a patch in, grind it down, THEN cover it with filler, then sand....in this case, he definately did a good job!

I bet your driver side looks similar to this:

Depending on the amount of damage / rot, it may be easier to get a used panel from a jy coupe or hatchback. Then cut/weld/fill the new piece on the car.

In my case, I used some sheetmetal from the local hardware store and went to town. Both the outer skin and inner panel were rotted on mine so I had a bit of metal fab to do.

I don't have setp by step pics of the entire repair, but here is a pic of the panel repaired:

And once I painted the car, you couldn't tell:

That is exactly what it looks like...unfortunately I don't think mine will come out like yours if I "go to town" on it...

I just looked at the thread..man, thats alotta work. Your "adjusted" progress goals reminded me of myself as I started playing with the car... Its definately come a long way, keep it up! I should stop being so greedy and post some of my progress pics, maybe next weekend.
