i saw this car in person before i really got into fairmonts. It has an unusual roof trim that I have never seen before. It is stainless. Discuss.

MERCURYS is what I'm bout. MERCURY CrAzY
I wonder if it was a take off of the "Heritage Edition" ThunderBird?
No, Ford never made them like that. Its just customized - like the rear spoiler and the cowl hood. Looks like they made some custom panels in place of the rear qtr windows. Could have made some type of wrap over targa band. From the pic it just looks like a paint stripe - similar to some factory paint jobs:

MF: Shoot pool Fast Eddie.
EF: Im shootin' pool Fats. When I miss you can shoot.
I never cared for the Futura late 70s bird post pillar window.
Hard to say if its original, looks like the lower rad support is a lighter color, and not black, which it would be if originally a black car.
i have a pretty good eye for things like this, and it looked stock. But that was, like i said, BEFORE i was really into fairmonts. Maybe I'll see it again at the drag strip this year.

The vinyl rear part looks like it has a t-bird logo on it. I'm thinking it's taken off an 80s (maybe 81-82?) T-bird, or made in that style. I do like the lok, but I imagine it makes for poor visibility in traffic (thinking that may not be a problem for that car...)
It was a ford dealer installed item. Many ford dealers across the U.S. were using different variations of them. Some were used with emblems at the bottom of both sides, but most just had the original plastic grille that was used on the Futura 1/4s reattached to frame off the bottom of the stainless. The wide piece across the top was one piece and made out of stainless, while the 2 moulding surrounds were aluminum.
I would slap use a hood like that. Don't care at all for the quarter window delete though. I think that takes away from the character of the sportsroof.

This is called a "Crown Coupe". From what I understand this is a dealer installed option. It is a stainless steel trim piece that is added. On the one pictured above, I believe the rear windows are a custom thing the car owner had done. I have seen a Crown Coupe in person, and recently spotted a couple more online.
Here is a link ( if this place will allow it ) of one that is currently for sale....

It's a Sun Coupe, a southwestern regional special edition with sun roof and brushed stainless band. Here is the package on a Durango:
I have seen two Futura coupes with the package over the years.

There was a 80-82 coupe in a junkyard with one of those that was posted up here last year. I'll have to dig and see if I can find the posting

Hi All...Attached are pics from 1983 of my wife's '78 Futura. I always wondered why I never saw another Fairmont with this 1955-1956 "Crown Vic" type trim on the roof. Car was sold new in Muncie, Indiana, we bought it used from the same dealer. Thanks for the help identifying what it was.
