    Default Route 66 Cruise

While visiting with Ray on our trip to pick up Rich's Black Magic, we talked about fun it would be to cruise Route 66. So we decided we would attempt to do so in August of this year. We are looking for fellow Fox Chassis folks to join us. We are looking for suggestions on points of interest. We are early in the planing stages so at this point all is possible. What does everyone think?

I have been talking about something like this for years now. Originally going to try it in my 66 Impala. Drove from Mass to Chicago in it to see in laws, and never went any further. I wasnt to do this real bad. Just not sure how 6500 miles round trip in a car that gets 8 mpg highway burning 93+ octane would go over cost wise.

Well, as Dave and I talked about my local area I mentioned that within roughly an hour of Tulsa alone, there are 5 Rt66 tourism spots to see. Oklahoma retains more of the original Rt66 than any other state, part of which I drive on every day. All in one day I can visit: the worlds largest totem pole, the Blue Whale, Will Rogers Birthplace and museum (actually thats 2 different locations), The Rock Cafe, The Round Barn in Mounds, and Pop's Cafe and sleep in my own bed that night!!

If anyone really is interested, this could be a really fun time for a bunch of us....imagine seeing a dozen or so FOX's cruising along old Rt66, not to mention posting the pic's on FEP!!! LOL

Any ideas or suggestions are welcomed so lets hear them!!

Man I spent some time researching options and stuff on doing that and had actually talked my wife in to going too. But it probably won't be this year as I wanted to build the 351w and repaint my car first. (you know.....for all the pics at every stop) I was thinking of driving up to Chicago then driving all the way to Los Angeles and then take the shortest route back home. But if I get a good start on my 69 mach 1 project this year then I may wait till its done and take it. I think the older the Hot Rod the more it would add to it... know what I mean.

driving route 66 is something i've always wanted to do. but i dont think i could do it in the mustang.

like varn said, my car will probably get about 10-11mpg highway and burns 93+, is 32 years old, and has only been on the highway once since 1998. the only way id be willing to drive it that far, is if there was a few foxes driving out from the east coast. that way, as i broke, not if i broke there would be people there to help me. haha.

66 runs right through (actually right past) Lexington. Ya'll could stop in for lunch or something.

I don't know if I'll have the Cobra up and moving by then.

Update - 2023 - Looking to buy 81 Mustang, 82/85/86 Mustang GT, and 79 - 86 Capri (No Sunroof). Not looking for all original/show cars or convertibles - I will be modifying. Would be nice if both were - Black Interior, PW, PL, AC, No - or very little rust. Motor/Trans/Axle not important. Options negotiable with price.

WEll if you guys ever make it out to the western part of route 66 I can think of some places worth checking out.

In western AZ it runs through a ghost town called Oatman. Bunch of western gift shops and the ocassional gun fight act. About 20 mins of detour off the route from there is Laughlin NV. Some casinos, a car museum at the Riverside casino.

I plan on taking mama to Florida this May but with 6 months notice I think we could pull it off. Sounds like a blast.
84 GT. Drop Eibach springs, KYB shocks W/quads and tube upper & lower control arms, short throw, Welded subframe connectors, cast camb plates, Mac shorty headers, 2.5 back with cats, underdrive pullies, Weiand intake, 600 holley, 8.8 W/373's. Ugly but fun.

That sounds great. I am new & don't really know any of the rest of you personally yet.
I may not be able to make the entire coast to coast trip, but would like to join in somewhere in the middle as you head west.

Yeah I would look at catching the portion between St Louis and Tulsa most likely.

I would hope you would consider the spring rather than late summer. I would suggest planning it around people making this show in June in Tulsa. Its well worth the trip!

The only problem with adding to the Mid-America Shelby Meet is the Shelby meet already has so much stuff going on that it'd be difficult to add in another smaller sub-show. It may be possible that we add ourselves into the mix as a club though....? That way we may be able to all park together on the cruise night and at the Sunday car show.

I didn't necessarily mean being a part of the show, more allowing those who wanted to attend. We could have our own gathering someplace. I just think this is an event that all Mustang enthusiasts should attend. What better way to attend than taking the route 66 path to get there!

I think this is something that we should all try to get on board with.....even if it doesn't happen this year, maybe it could be organized for next spring when everyone's itching to get out of the house!!

If anyone comes through the Tulsa area, I live about one mile off Rt66 and would be willing to lead the pack to some of the big tourist spots I mentioned in one of my previous posts. Depending on the day you roll through, we may even be able to host a dinner here at my place!!! Burgers on the grill anyone??
