    Default carb throttle cable

I'm gathering parts to do the cfi to carb swap, and now I'm wondering what's going to happen with the throttle cable. Will I be able to use the cfi cable as is or have to modify it, or just go with one from a carb car....

I'll have to compare them side by side, but I don't believe there is any difference between the
throttle cables on my two '85 GTs.

I went from a cfi 3.8 to a 5.0 with a weiand intake. I had it cobbled together for a while, but if my memory serves me right (and i will check when i get home) but my intake didn't have the same mounting for the 84's cable, and i ended up going to a junkyard and scrounged around for a bracket that would work.
I used to have superhuman powers, but my therapist took them all away.

84 mercury capri gs, 3.8 to 5.0 swap, weiand intake, edelbrock 600, longtube headers, c4 then an aod then another c4, 3.73 geared 8.8 with worn clutches, gt sway bars, boxed control arms.

spare engine and doug nash 4+1 waiting to go in. A4 based supercharged 306 in the near future...

I changed my car from a cfi 3.8 to a 5.0 also and the throttle cable was fine its the bracket thats the issue. I ended up using a universal gm one for now until I can locate something better

No way there's a 1 foot difference between the throttle cable on my carbed '85 GT,
vs my CFI '85 GT. Sure you're not thinking carb vs SEFI?

Not too sure if there is a difference between the cfi and sefi cars seeing as if the throttle body was in the same location but I can attest that you are right about it not being a foot longer. It was exactly 18"......I will see if I can get some picks uploaded to show the differences between my cables. Either way.....I am willing to part with my carb cable.

On my 85 GT, which was a CFI car til I swapped to carb, the original cable and bracket work with no problems whatsoever. I can even get a pic this weekend if there is anybody doubting me!

SEFI cars have a longer cable than CFI/carbed 5.0's..... As far as it looks, the CFI and 4 bbl cars have the SAME throttle cables.

yeah take a shot if you would. How did you go about hooking up the AOD, with a lokar cable?

  14. #14

    Default

With a carburetor, the Lokar cable is your only choice. Ford never used the AOD with a
4-barrel carburetor, so there are no factory bits you can scrounge to do the job. Even
though the TV linkage on the CFI throttle body looks similar to a C4 kickdown lever, it's
different enough that the C4 kickdown cannot be easily modified to do the job.

Unlke a C4, the AOD cannot be run without a functioning TV linkage or cable.
    Cheers,
    Jeff Cook

I want to make sure I get the trans hooked up right, I can't afford messing it up. Well maybe, if that can lead to a t5 swap hmm.....

I'll get a pic tomorrow for you. I don't have my TV cable hooked up yet, as it is too cold to be out in that storage unit now! But, JACook is right, Lokar is the only choice we have.

JACOOK... I think you might be right about the cables. I was getting tunnel vision between the sd and maf setups. If I recall the CFI was a throttle body look arrangement. I removed the carb cable this weekend and have some pics if you are intrested in 85.0...

No worries. I figured that was the case, but didn't feel like it was worth arguing about.

Comparing the cables on both my '85s, they both measure right at 9.25" from the firewall
flange to the bracket on the intake manifold. I'll also add that these are both the same
length as the throttle cable in my '79 StaWag.
    Cheers,

All you need is the Lokar AOD TV cable and the Lokar cable bracket that mounts to the carb stud!

And, it may or may not matter, but my '82 GT's accelerator cable had yellow-colored paint on the the ball-socket arm, as did the NOS one I got to replace it. But all of the Holley 4V cars I've seen have purple paint on the arm. I happen to have both types of cables on hand, and the purple one appears to be an eighth of an inch longer, between the manifold bracket and the ball socket.
    Dunno which one CFI uses.
