Thread: 1982 GT project

    Default 1982 GT project

Last year I bought a low mileage 82 GT off this forum (http://vb.foureyedpride.com/showthread.php?t=94871) , complete minus engine/tranny/exhaust. Very straight body, some minor pin holes in the spare tire area. I will be doing a complete EFI conversion with the parts from a complete 89' 5.0 LX I bought. It will start off with the stock motor with around 60K on a stock rebuild, 3550 tranny, and a 8.8 3:55 rear. A complete Recaro interior from a 79 Pace Car will be installed. I am in the process of sorting thru the wiring now.

Sounds like a great project!!! My 82 GT has a 88' EFI motor...

I really wanted to do this to my other 79 Pace Car I have, but the 82 should require less work in the long run and I'm trying to use up alot of the parts I have stockpiled to free up some room.

Finally got alot of work done in it, mostly in the last few days. Dash is out, put in new heater core, ran the main EFI harness into the interior, and swapped in the newer clutch quadrant for the safety swithes, new clutch cable, and speedo cable. In the process of mounting all the EFI stuff in the engine compartment and should have all the wiring done in the next few weeks. Gas tank has the correct sending unit in now and all the EFI fuel lines have been run. SVO master cylinder installed for the bigger front brakes. The front K member was swapped to the 89' also. Will be rebuilding the stock T5 and using the 3550 somewhere else.

    This is coming along nicely!

I may use it as inspiration to do the same to my 82 GT that I purchased sans engine and transmission.

    Good Luck!

Yes, I'm a lazy ass!! Finally cut all the rust out of the spare tire well and got the new metal welded in. Should have all the EFI wiring done by the end of the month. Plan is to have the car running by the end of August and work out all the little details. Will prime the car black and drive for awhile, I hope.

Wiring is complete, engine and tranny installed this weekend. Hope to have it running next time I'm home, which is about 2 weeks away!!! Can't wait. I installed the seats and carpet out of the wrecked 89 donor LX that gave its life for this project. Will also have pics next time.

FINALLY got the car running today. After I got all the tranny connections hooked up and got it primed, it runs!! Somehow I managed to get all the wiring correct and had no problems. The only problem I do have is it seems that somewhere between full engagement and no engagement of the clutch pedal there is a dead spot where the engine wants to shut off, so I have to figure out what that is. Other than that, it sounds great thru open headers.

When you say the engine wants to shut off, is it an electrical issue?

I wonder if you have a problem with the neutral safety switch on the clutch pedal itself. If you hooked the switch up there on the pedal it might be worth making sure that isn't the issue.

I'm sure it is an issue with the switch. Just not sure how or why. The engine will not start unless the clutch is depressed, just like its supposed to. I did wire it in so it would work just like the 89' it came out of. There is a spot about midway travel where it cuts off momentarily, can't be more than a half inch of travel. Very strange. Have not bothered to check it out yet. I'm open to suggestions.

I would probably bypass the switch first. If that eliminates the problem, then most likely there is something wrong with the switch. I installed the same switch setup in my PC when I rewired it and installed the 5 speed. I had one switch that acted strange too. When I bypassed it completely everything worked fine. I swapped the switch out for another one and haven't had any issues since.

I would have to look at the switch again, but I vaguely remember something about either being able to install the switch upside down or something like that as for how the switch works. Sorry I am so vague, but it's been 3 years since I had to mess with it and I am getting older! I just remember taking the switch off and checking the full motion of it while checking continuity through the switch.

I was thinking it was a bad spot in the switch also, since it works otherwise.

Here is a really bad picture of the engine. Still have a few things to mount and I am gonna move the starter solenoid and clean up the wiring. Engine looks like crap because I didn't do anything but remove it from the wrecked car and install it, but it runs good. I plan on painting the car and building a new engine when the time comes. Just gonna drive it in primer for now.

Then I would definitely bypass the switch for the time being. Once you get it on the road, you could check the switch again, if the problem is still there, replace the switcha and your golden!

    how did it turn out?

Well I replaced the clutch pedal switch and still had the same problem. Jumped across the terminals and all is well, so I have a wiring issue. Still working on it. Had a bent K member so I had to replaced that, which led to other issues. Front is now done, full length sub frame connectors welded in. Need to tighten upper/lower rear control arm bolts, finish the exhaust and interior, and should be able to start driving. Oh yeah, and put on the new passenger side door, and thats all.................

Finally 12 months later it runs!!! Have a bunch of little things to complete before it hits the road to work out the bugs. Only major thing left the is exhaust, which doesn't want to fit right. BBK long tubes, X pipe, and Flowmasters. Lots of space on one frame rail and almost toughing the other. Driving me crazy and I've spent alot of time looking up at it.
