Default 1986 5.0 ASC Mclaren Capri convertible

I am thinking about buying a 1986 5.0 ASC Mclaren Capri convertible with an auto trans but wanted to find out a few things about them before I get in too deep and try to borrow the cash from my Dad to buy it. The Car is in decent shape and the guy that owns it says it runs good. The car has around 130k miles on it and the car looks like it is the factory light academy metallic blue. It is completely factory right down to the rims and stock radio. It needs some very minor body work and the vert top is completely shot. The guy wants $1200 for it.

First question is, What kind of vert top came on these cars and can you still buy them?

Second question is, can you still get the ground effects for these cars? This one doesn't have them

The rest of the items are basic capri stuff

I think you can still get the tops, they are not a perfect match but they are supposed to be close. Hopefully someone else chimes in here.

For your second question, no '85 Convertibles came with the ground effects. In '86 there was a Sports Decor Package that basically gave you the coupe ground effects; but that was not offered in '85. That being said, I think most people agree they look better with the ground effects and I doubt it would hurt the value. Hank at ASCMclaren.com has all of the ground effects available still, but they are not cheap.

I'd love to see you pick up that car though, beautiful color!

Yes I normally hate metallic paint but I really like the metallic blue colors ASC used on their cars, light and dark. What I would really love to get is a coupe but I have never seen one in Cali and the ones out of state would cost too much to ship. With the price of the car and the registration costs, I would be over $10k most likely. Was just on ASCMclaren.com, I tried to buy a rear spoiler for my RS there before, Hank wants $750 for a top for this car! OUCH!

would be great if there was a cheaper place to get one LOL

I want to say they were modified Merc-Benz tops of some type, but I could be wrong. There might be cheaper places to find them, spend some time on ASCmclaren.org (the forum) and you might come up with some better answers. Besides, you'll never have the top up on that car anyway! It's a convertible for a reason!

    Default McLaren

I have an 85. I had the top replaced as the non-original was getting thin, ripped at the stitching and windows cracked/fogged. I bought what was supposed to be an original top and looked the be made about 88 or 89. It did not fit as well as I expected (short on the quarters). The fabric was 2 layer, not like the single layer on the old one. The other down side is the windows are fogging over (like a moss growing from the bottom up) on this one too after a couple of years. Original $750 plus $600 installation. Aftermarket $250-$350 plus installation.

    Ask there!

Also the top was 100% custom. Not modified from any other car.

    Default THIS ONE???

I just ran across this ad for an 86 ASC McLaren Capri Convertible on the LA Craigslist. Must be the one you are considering buying:

I've never seen one before. I hope you are able to get it and fix it up!

    Default Blue 86

That Blue 86 pops up from time to time. I first saw it several times for $600 not running and needing a fuel pump. Still in the Hollywood area. It may have flipped 1-5 times by now.
