    Default 79 stock

So one of my friends back home is selling a 79 stock 5.0 hatchback. Ive always wanted one of these models mustang and Im interested in finally getting my first project car. The car appears to be in excellent shape and she is asking 800 dollars. Im wondering if this is worth it, and how much and what kind of mods i can make to make it into a car that i can drive normally but get more power out of it. Im very new to this as i am only 19 but i would love to get into it.

The skys the limit on a fox body. If its a 302 car, its not too tough to pull that engine and do relativly minor mods to it and you will easily be pushing 250hp which will motivate that car very well and keep it very drivable. Good luck on your first Mustang!

Grab it and run. If you don't.... let me know where "back home" is. LOL. Like said above, the sky is the limit, there are so many different things you could do with that car. It looks to have a good, straight body. Does the sunroof leak? How do the floors look? Is it a 4speed? Welcome to the site and hope you get it. Look forward to seeing progress and more pics.

I forgot to inquire as to rather it ran or not. Seems odd someone would pull a driveshaft out of a complete running car. automatic......I still think its a good deal as long as the car is in good shape. Its just a little more work if you want a manual.

It really depends on what you want the car to be. You could make it a clone of something (pace car, cobra, or an 82GT), a street legal drag car, road racer, or just something that looks good to hot rod around.

I would get it running, if its not, just so its mobile. Then make sure the brakes and suspension is in order.(saftey first ) As far as performance, you could rebuild the 302, or a newer 5.0 roller engine midly built would be plenty for cutting up here and there. Ditch the 7.5 rear end for an 8.8 (86 up GTs) Converting to 5 lug is a nice step too. That would give you a lot more wheel choices. There is a sticky on the swap in this forum.

Alright guys sounds good, I looked into how much a drive shaft is and new its 300 for a racing one, used I can find dirt cheap. I just want for now something that is nice to ride around in with some power. I may do some of the more in depth stuff later on but thanks for the performance suggestions. Keep those in mind

Is it really that simple to install a drive shaft? just looked at a how to and if all u have to do is slide it in the trannsmission and bolt it on.........then ill have no problem with that. I just need to get the right length drive shaft as that is the only problem that they have one thats to short........how do i know which one i will need for a 79 auto transmission.

They are good cars with no mods. Reliable, good looking.
Drive it to find out positively what you like and dislike about it.
Keep the likes and act on the dislikes.

Tune up, fix everything that is wrong, worn out, broken with it.
Don't mess with anything that is working.
Keep notes, records, and a good mechanic.

Most any car improves with updated tires and rims, new paint.
Keep after it. Rust is the enemy.

Yes, Just slide it in and 4 bolts. Make sure to check your trans fluid as it may have leaked out the tail shaft. As far as length of the shaft... I think you can use any 79-95 mustang shaft (45.5" from center to center of the U-joints), but I'm not sure on the yoke. I think you need 28 spline and the lengths of the yokes maybe different from auto to manual. Someone on here knows, I'm sure.

Also, it would be a good idea while the shaft is out to replace the u-joints if they are worn and the tailshaft seal. I would also put some medium strength thread locker on the bolts so they don't vibrate out.

Thanks guys, I'm so pumped about getting home and checking this out. Yesterday I finally got to ask them about the car and interior is good, it ran before but they switched transmissions and then there drive shaft was to short. I've just become obsessed with these cars in 2 days

So it has a c4 transmission, so I need to find a drive shaft that would work for that. He said I'd need to fabricate one.

Any driveshaft from a C4 equipped fox mustang should work.

You can also use one from a 5sp or AOD car with this driveshaft spacer kit.

So if I used that drive shaft spacer I could use the one they have right now from before they put in a new transmission? or do I need a new one cuz its a 5.0.

If the shaft was from a 4cyl car you need to get one from a V8 car.

Preferably one with a C4 but you can use a 5sp or AOD shaft with that spacer.
