    Question Rebuild Question.

I have an 1991 302 out of a gran marquis with only 160 thousands kms on it not miles. My question is do I need to replace the lifters and timming chain? Also what about the rings and main bearrings?

I am going to cam it. I have new heads and intake for it.

    Let me know,
    Thanks
    Alex

If the timing chain is nice and tight and not loose, it should be fine. I would do the lifters if you are changing the heads anyway.

All the rest will depend on what your budget is like and how many miles are on the motor.

That is about 100,000 miles. Is that a HO roller motor?

Throw the new heads on and intake and replace all the gaskets and rear main seal. I would throw a new waterpump on as well and new thermostat. if your budget is higher you can do up the bottom end.

I just did one with 120,000 miles on the clock. Pull the intake, heads, and oil pan. Check the bores to make certain there is still factory hatching...may as well check the big end of the rods for excessive play while there also. Clean the tops of the piston bores and pistons up from the carbon buildup. Install new oil pump and timing chain/gear set. Clean everything up and put back together with new gasket set...be sure to get the front and rear main seals (I pulled the rear cap to replace the rear main just to look at the condition of the bearing). I had a little better cam that I put in and decided to reuse the original roller lifters. Install the heads (I had fresh GT40p's that went back on) and upper valve train assembly. Fill her up with oil and use a drill to prime the engine. From there you can put everything else back on...and I would go ahead and put a new water pump on.

I wonder if that engine also had the forged pistons and chome moly rings?

No, the non-HO engine had standard cast pistons with a standard ring pack!

The cast pistons would not worry me unless the engine is being reved over 6,000 rpm, it is being sprayed, or it will not stay naturally aspirated...it is the rings that might not be as forgiving.

It wont be reved over 6k and it wont be sprayed. What do you mean about the rings that might not be as forgiving?

Moly rings wear better...when you tear it down just take a close look at the cylinder walls...you will probably be okay.

Whats better high volume oil pump or standard oil pump?

Very few properly built engines need a high volume oil pump. And running one just 'cause
the Chebby guys do, can cause more problems than it might solve. If a standard volume
oil pump is able to maintain sufficient oil pressure for your engine's RPM range, all a high
volume pump will do is heat the oil, put more oil in the top of the engine, and accelerate
wear on the distributor and cam gears.

High volume oil pumps are a throwback to the days when guys used to run .0025-.003"
clearance on their bearings. No good engine builder does that anymore.
    Cheers,
    Jeff Cook
