Thread: Holly Carb ID

    Default Holly Carb ID

I figured this was the best place to ask, so here it goes. My dad found a carburetor today. It's in desperate need of a rebuild, something I'd love to try my hand at. It's a 4 barrel holly made for motorcraft. The numbers on it say

    E5HE-6510-E0 (That last 0 might be an 8 )
    LIST 50260-2
    1425

I googled a bit, and it sounds like this came off of a 460 truck? I don't think that would work on my 302, would it?

Looking at my Holley book and although I cannot find the direct part number it looks like you might have a 4160/650 CFM carb... I may be wrong, if so maybe someone on here can chime in with the correct size.

I did a little searching on the internet and everything I found states it came off a mid 80's 460ci truck. Pretty sure its a 4180 series, 585cfm.

The E5HE carb is a 4180C, similar to what was used on the Mustang HO engines. But
there are some differences, mostly in the calibration. The E5HE carb was originally used on
heavy truck applications, like the F750 and larger, with the 460 engine. The ones I've taken
apart have smaller jets and secondary metering plate orifices, a different choke index plate,
and fast idle cam. Some of the E5HE carbs do not have the secondary idle mixture screws,
    some do.

I believe with some different jets, and metering plate, plus a Holley 3-1346 rebuild kit,
that carb would probably work just fine on your 302.

Thanks guys, I had a feeling that a 4160 was incorrect... Hopefully this helps him out!

I had a similar carb and I sent an email to Holley and got a reply back the next day. Must have been a slow day for the tech at Holley.

Thanks guys. I have CFI right now, and I'm debating between slapping a carb on it or going to fuel injection. I'm kinda leaning to the latter for better fuel mileage, but it'll be more work.

Maybe I oughta just save up and go all the way with a late model roller engine, preferably with MAF.

Do you think this carb is worth much of anything?

I sometimes buy those carbs for parts, and I generally won't go more than about $20-$25
for a nice one. And if the fuel bowls have been epoxied up, or the baseplate hacked, I won't
    touch it.

If your car is CFI, a lot of the hassle converting to SEFI is already done for you. What year
    is your car?
