what makes the 1980 mustang gas tank different from other years? because i have a 1980 that is full of old gas(1996) and was wondering if other years would work if they were modded.

Interesting, I did not know this. I was keeping a 79 gas tank as a spare for my 80 Cobra in case I needed one down the road. What makes them different?

thats what i am trying to figure out.
Sorry, misread your first post.
I just went out and compared the spare gas tank(1979) to the one on my car(1980) and can't find any differences. Inlets are the same diameter, the lines out are the same (same spot also), both have the vapor line on top (can't actually see mine but there is a line going up there).
So I went to Oreillys parts store online and compared the two. Both came up with part number F82A. Then I dug a little further and searched for an 81 gas tank, early 81's (pre 4/1/81) are the same as 79 and 80 but later ones have the fuel lines on top with the vapor return line. See pic below.

These were for Mustangs with factory 302's and 255's.
So to answer your question, looks like you need one from 79 to early 81. Otherwise you would need to modify your fuel lines to route them to the top of the tank instead of the lower front passenger side.

And the 79-80 gas tanks are not being remanufactured by anyone. If you have a good one, you better hang on to it. The older gas tanks are smaller than the 81-93 tanks, 12 gallons vs. 15 gallons. You can fit the newer style in a 79-80 car with some work. I just finished the job. You have to change the tank strap mounting points and I had to beat in the edge of the tank in a few places to get it to fit up into the space between the spare tire well and the frame rail. I used the newer tank straps too.
thanks this is good info. do you have any pics of where you had to change the strap mounting points?
My 79 has the old style 'T' shaped strap end. Slides into the slotted strap connection on the under body, over the axle area.
The bumper end of the straps are basically the same as the newer ones.
The newer straps have bolt on provisions at both ends.
It is the front most end that is different. Have not crossed the river to do the conversion yet.
Gonna get a fuel tank repair shop to do it, since i have no plans to do any Smokey Y. or military aircraft style tank drops ever.

I was about to say 81+ were bigger.
Added the later style tank strap mount on the passenger side and made a new mount for the driver's side. Had to move mounting bolt locations on the other side of the strap too.
1979 capri, a mess, 86 efi
I have a question for the people that used newer style tanks "electric fuel pump & sending units on top" in 79 - 80 cars.
Does the 79 - 80 sending unit bolt in & does the gauge work properly.

"Doh, Why do my actions have consequences?"
I never found that in my searches. If you have good straps, then that is a better option than all the mods needed to fit the bigger tank even if you switch over to efi like I am doing.
