    Default My '80 Fairmont

I've been meaning to post up pics of my '80 Fairmont for a while now. Took me this long to figure out how. Got this car in March '10 from a local guy. 81,xxx mi., A/C, ps, pb, 6cyl., auto. Very clean, minor surface rust in a couple spots in the wheel wells (where mudflaps were attached). I'm not sure of my long term plans for this car, but so far I've installed the Mustang 10 hole wheels, GT front and rear sway bars and quick ratio power rack. I have the parts necessary to install GT front disc brakes, so that's next. I'd like to get the A/C working again too. Needs some little things like weather strip, window track, etc. That's all for now.

Thanks. Paint is original. The underside is as clean as the top. Southern Illinois car. The front seat needs to be re-upholstered. It' definitely a good platform to start with, I couldn't believe the lack of rust.

I'll try to remember to take pics when doing stuff to it(Mustang brakes,eg) and post in this thread. The car was optioned kind of oddly, PS, PB, A/C, cruise control, but with manual windows, mirrors, locks, seats and AM radio.

When you changed the rack over what pump did you use with it?

stock replacement. I ended up replacing the rack, hoses and pump all at the same time. are there different pumps for the different ratio racks? I haven't had issues with it since making the change.

    Thanks!

btw, just finished stereo install. not too impressed with the bass from those
tiny 5 x 7 rear speakers(Rockford-Fosgate Punch), but having FM, CD and MP3 has made the wife & kids very happy.

Guys, my Fairmont is equipped with cruise control, but the steering wheel has a crack and it's thin and I'd like to replace it. I have a steering wheel from an '89 LX with the CC buttons on it. Would this wheel mount up in place the original? If not, what options do I have? Thanks

Unfortunately, two things prevent the swap. First, Fairmont's don't have a horn button on the steering wheel. To activate the horn, one must push in (toward the center of the steering column) the turn signal lever.
The other problem up until '82 Fairmont steering wheels mated to a splined steering shaft. The '89 Mustang had a double D steering shaft so their steering wheels can not be attached to the splined shaft.

The shaft could be replace but I'm not sure the slip rings for the CC buttons are in the same place on the old Fairmont steering wheel vice the '89 Mustang steering wheel.

You can swap the whole steering column, though. Physically fits; you'll have to play with the wiring a little but I don't think it would be that hard.
