We had a great test and tune today. Details will be posted in the race tech and dyno section. I had three questions heading into today - Would the tires rub? No Would the car finally hook? Absolutely! Would the transmission break if the car hooked hard? No.

The day just couldn't have gone much better. Now I feel ready for the race season to start next Friday night.

New England Dragway should be opening up soon. I will be needing to get some wheel time in- consistency is an issue with me. I hope to have the rear suspension settled in soon, and then I can make a decision on tires. I was surprised to see you were only in the high thirteens with your 351- makes me wonder if a swap from a 302 is worth it.

Brianj, don't forget that 351 was out of a truck and had the stock heads and cam. It was done at 4500 rpm. Stock for stock I don't really see an advantage going from a 302 to a 351. The upside is what you can build with the bigger motor.

In my case I bought it after I blew up my 393 as a drop in replacement to finish out that season. If I had intended it as a long term motor I'd have at the minimum done heads and cam on it, which would have made a world of difference I think. I still dream of making a 408 out of it someday so I have a good spare motor. In the meantime it sits on a stand ready for action if needed.

Well, that explains it. I did not know it was a stock truck motor. This is a debate I am having in my head- 302 or 351. Still have not made up my mind.

Stock for stock a 302 and a 351 (depending on the year) have the same heads besides the bolt hole sizes... Thats like putting a set of GT40p heads on a 351, the only thing you will get out of that 351 will be 302 power... Scott

Brian, I know where you're coming from. Years ago when I was deciding which motor for my car, I knew I wanted a stroker, but had trouble choosing whether it should be 302 or 351 based. I went with the bigger motor because to reach the same power output a bigger motor will need less rpm, and lower rpm theoretically means longer life. I only expected to be able to build one motor, I wanted it to last a long time.

There are lots of guys making the same power with a 347 as I do with my 408, but they rev a grand or so higher to do it. Over the long term those revs will take a toll. I've heard rpm mentioned as meaning "ruins people's motors", and there's some truth to that.
