Hey, I am new to this site and I found you guys to be the most accurate for issues such as mine. I have a 1980 hachback that was my fathers first car and passed down to me. I am 26 now and the car has been siting for 50% of its life. So you can imagine the shape it is in. Everyone says I should junk it, I just don't have the heart to. So my issue is:

The carb went out a month ago and I bought a rebuild kit. Cleaned it up, replaced all that looked worn, put it back together, and now it won't stay running. My guess is the linkage. the upper butterfly is either open too much or closed. It will start and run as long as I keep the throttle open. As soon as I let off, it dies. Any Ideas as to what I can do to fix this. I realy don't want to have to buy a new one. $280 for a new Holley single barrel carb. That is too much for me. So any help would be great. Thanks.

Check alternator belt for tightness, it influences voltage when running. The loose belts can cause running idle problems which are actually not carb problems, due to primary igntion voltage being too low.

Check idle speed and advance is in spec if you can, and compression check and look at the vac lines closely. EGR valve and hot air stove and the white choke heat pipe should be in good condtion, and the choke should be energised to work. Open the throttle stop and raise the idle speed more. 1946 is a little tricky to sort out, but there are ways to check it. Vac diagrams are handy, and make sure the Durasparks advance unit is working and hooked up right.

Good advice, xctasy. I hope that issue was resolved already. That post is over (barely) a year old. I was gonna suggest the poster go to http://vb.foureyedpride.com/forumdisplay.php?f=128 and post there. Then I noticed the year of his post.
