Why's the board down on Thursday?

I've posted briefly about this, but perhaps if mentions of it are here and there, folks might run across the information and be prepared for the next go 'round.

If you've been around a while, you likely noticed that the site has undergone some serious changes this year. We've had a rough ride with a less-than-ideal switch of hosts and some damaged databases. I took the opportunity to get started on some upgrades and do my best to learn a large number of things to make me a better site boss. There's a lot to learn and a lot to do, so much of this is slow going. At this point, with things both technical and user-related, I'm putting in full-time job hours on the site. I'm sure a more knowledgeable person could have done many things far quicker than I have, but if I don't get to learning now, I never will. The more I learn, the better this site will be for everyone who visits it.

I am fortunate enough to have a very talented programmer and web developer who has offered to mentor me and assist me with a number of behind the scene tasks that, for the most part, won't impact your experience as a user (or if it does, it should be positive). A lot of maintenance, repair, coding, add-ons and whatnot need to be taken care of. Today, for example, work was done to make the database that powers this site much healthier. I looked at a lot of code this afternoon and learned more about databases. We may have made the site a little more responsive, I hope that it has, but the end goal was long term functionality; trying to prevent problems from happening.

So, a lot of the time, when the site comes back up on Thursday afternoons/evenings, you may not notice anything different, and usually that's the goal. Other times, new features may appear, and I hope they are ones that will benefit the FourEyedPride community.

I thank you for your patience on the days when the site has to be taken down for some work. It's being done in the name of getting things set up for the long haul and I hope you'll stick around for that.
