In the following pictures, is the black thing attached to the air cleaner (see first picture) the same thing as the circled part on the diagram with the question mark? Also, what goes into the second hole in the back of the air cleaner, next to the pcv line (last picture)?

Thanks much.

I do believe you have the right component circled. As for the open hole in the air cleaner, I know there was a hose that goes from the air cleaner to the valve cover. Some air cleaners have more holes in them than they did components and some of the holes were plugged too.

ahhh, a picture from the book I see. I just looked at my book, and there is not much in the way of ID for that piece on the A/c. Take the number to a ford parts counter and they will be able to tell you what it is. The 9H301 number is an engeering number, but can be translated into a part number and description. I can look and see if I have a emmissions diagrahm for a Calif. car.

I will be sending you a few more pages that I found in a few days. Send a PM to "sellis1012" and have him also work with you, he has the same thingie on his 49 state car. The 49 state diagram does not have the vvvac valve, but sellis' car does. I did not get a chance to call the dealer parts counter and find out what that thingie is, and have forgot over the years. I also don't have it in any of my books. Mabe Negusim would have an emission book for 79. I can also check with a friend that retired out of the shop that has a large number of books.

here is the base number of the valve after a google search, found on truck forums..

BTW, my 78 F-150 with a 460 does not have air pump, no EGR, and no restrictor for unleaded fuel iin either tank neck, and the fuel gauge is not labeled "unleaded fuel only", it has the trailer towing option, and was certified for leaded fuel in 78. looks like that IS the valve you suspect.

Great Info. Just want to get the car running to pass smog:) Still debating putting the 5.0 in it since I have a complete parts car just waiting. Would be less vacuum hoses for one:)
