View Full Version : Shoot, Headlight bulb died
Well, it seems one of the H4 100/55 watt bulbs that LTDScott had tossed in my LTD LX when he owned it died. I thought it'd be easy to find a 100/55 watt replacement locally. But all I could find were 60/55 H4's. So I ordered a pair of Hella 100/55 watt H4's (http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=HLA-H83140141&N=700+4294922616+4294905986+4294784247+115&autoview=sku) from summit racing.
Originally LTDScott had done this conversion a few years back with Cibie headlamps, a set of German made euro H4 100/55 watt bulbs, and a relay. I can only assume that scott tossed 100/55watt bulbs in all four headlamps. I'll have to check the high beams next time I get a chance.
Now, I've read that the 100/55 watt H4's are not legal for street use. Is this right? Hell, seems they've been on the car this long, may as well just continue with them!
Now, to just get through the next couple days/nights w/o cops pulling me over or idiots nagging me cause I only have one head light working (passengers only now).

100/55w are for off-road use only, no matter the country ... 60/55w bulbs are more than adequate for daily use, especially with the relay mod.
Ok, I'm wondering why this was moved. I wasn't asking a particular question according to the model of the car. IF I had, I'd have posted it in the "other FOX" section myself. I was making a statement... basically.

Thanks man... I kinda got that after reading up on the site. Surprised me about the bulb I found in the car! Though, seems nobody complained yet since LTDScott tossed them on many years ago. Coarse, I really don't have to use the high beams too often so that could be why.

100/55s are technically not street legal, but that sure didn't stop me. 99% of the time you're driving with only the low beams on, so no cop would know you'd have 100W high beams unless you have the high beams on. I have the same lights in my car (except I have Hella housings) and boy did those bright high beams come in handy driving in the back country the other night.
I bought my bulbs from a local off road shop. If the only place you found them online was Summit, you're not looking hard enough ;)

And FYI the only reason I found this post is because it was in the Other Fox section. But I agree whoever moved it shouldn't have.
Thanks Scott!
Yeah, I didn't look hard enough.
But I did the Summit way anyways. Cause I've been working late for the past few weeks and just can't get the time to go to a off road store during the day.
I was thinking of maybe getting a new set of lenses. The ones on the car are pitted. :|
But then again, I also don't think it's really all that necessary to replace them when they're working just fine.

Just be aware that those lenses are not cheap.

Thats one of the reasons why I'm not doing it....
But the thought is still there!

Hellas are not cheap but what a great beam for a factory headlight (well they were factory on my sold-new-in-Switzerland Pace Car).
Even before switching to relays i never had such a good lighting on my cars until my 1999 Saab daily-driver (but it has relays from factory ;)).

I had Hella conversion headlights for my '69 Firebird - they were great! Too bad they weren't rectangular I could use them. I kept them when I sold the Firebird. I still may change the Friggin' Futura to round headlights.
Oh, the inner pair of headlights won't use H4 - the inner headlights are high beam only. I seem to recall they took H1 bulbs.

Yup, inners are 100W H1s on Marz's car.

For inner, you have the choice of running H1 or H4 headlights. I prefer H4, that's a "quick" available low-beam spare ;)

I would have figured that out.... eventually.

Damn, thats a great idea.
However, I felt it was necessary to replace the low beams as a pair. That means I'll have an extra as a spare in the trunk, just in case. I will be sure to take a pair of nylon gloves home with me tonight so I wont get any finger oils on the bulbs during install.
I did have time to go to the off road 4x4 place in the way home last night. They had PIAAs that were going for around 50 to 60 bucks a pair! :|

Try Philips NightVision (white and yellow beam in the same bulb ... great for night driving) or ExtremePower (most powerfull you can find) if you can ... you should get them cheaper than PIAAs with great lighting while using 55/60 bulbs.
