Hose feels squishy when hot - never seen that before? Previous owner says might be due to a little leak of the valve cover gaskets resulting in oil vapor condensing on the hose?

Probably just old, replace them.

Hoses will be softer though when hot.

Does the rubber appear swollen? Usually when hoses get attacked by oil or other
solvents, the rubber will swell as well as get squishy. Good hoses, BTW, don't do
this.

Might this just be a case of the radiator cap not holding system pressure?

(currently still :-) ) my car.

Hose feels oily when cold. I had originally replaced the bad heater hose with bulk 3/4" hose from Autozone 5 years ago - probably was Thermoid or no-name brand, definitely not Gates, Dayco or Goodyear bulk hose. All other hoses on my cars are molded and name brand - but try getting just a few feet of NAME BRAND heater hose from the local car parts store...
