View Full Version : Full dual exhaust on your FZ? - here is something to think about

If you have or are planning on installing a full 5.0L Mustang type dual exhaust on your FZ you should consider the location of the fuel filler overflow tube with respect to the passenger side exhaust pipe. Im not sure exactly how its configured on a 5.0L Mustang but on an FZ the fuel filler overflow tube outlet ends up almost directly over where the passennger side tailpipe ends up. Obviously no FZ ever had factory dual exhaust so Ford did not worry about it, but if you install it (like I have) then its probably something you should think about. If you ever overfill the tank at a filling station the fuel would spill on or close to the passenger side tailpipe and that could be a...problem. I though about it for a long time and when Id thought about it long enough I modified the existing overfill tube on my Fairmont by cutting the rubber hose back a few inches (so it now ends in the trunk above the rubber grommet in the lower inner quarter) and installed a piece of steel tubing into the cut end of the existing tube (and secured with a hose clamp), bent so it has an angle in it so that it exits thru the grommet and bends sharply away from the tailpipe. I put a short piece of rubber hose over the steel tube where it passes thru the existing gromment (secured with nylon ties) to make up the difference between the steel tube's OD and the grommet's larger ID).
Just something to think about. Hope this is helpful info. Sorry no pics.

Good idea. I noticed that on my Cougar wagon the other day when I was under there fiddleing with the fuel tank float. But my having an inline 6 I'll probably not ever have duals.

Just an update. I saw how Ford did the overflow tube on Mustangs at least back to 1985. The overflow tube exits from the filler pipe housing towards the rear (as opposed to towards the front on FZ) and exits at the bottom of the bumper.

I'd thought gasoline dumped near the end of the exhaust pipe would be more hazardous. The tail pipe itself is fairly cool compared to the head pipe and usually the engine's off when refueling.
However, I like the bypass idea - better safe than flaming...

I had the tailpipes come out right behind the rear tires on my wagon, will probably do the same on this LTD, only 3" may be tougher to route.

On the Mustangs I looked at where the overflow came out the bottom corner of the bumber it was quite a distance from the end of the tailpipe.

Having spent last weekend grabbing rear exhaust hangers from two Mustangs, I noticed the exhaust tip does go past the hole in the bumper area. So I guess it's not a flame thrower waiting to happen!

But my having an inline 6 I'll probably not ever have duals.
I had 2" duals on my I6. Y pipe, gutted cat, no muffler, and "I think" an earlier exhaust manifold without the coffee can cat. Sounded mean at idle and cruise, yet not obnoxiously loud. Well, even at WOT, it wasn't very loud.
But I did the same thing with my overflow. The pipes guy gave me some scrap tubing to use. Oddly enough, the receipt for "new exhaust" got me out of my muffler ticket:D
