I am looking to get more traction at the track and i have a spare set of 10 hole wheels for my 85 GT. So my question is what size tires can i go to get the best traction and not have clearance issues?

If you want traction and good contact patch, going ridiculously large on tire size WILL NOT get that for you. Get some drag radials in 235 and you'll be fine. I think I ran 235-60-15 BFGs and liked them pretty well. You'll have to walk them outta the hole just a bit, I tended to launch at around 2500, not massive, but I also didn't have any drag suspension help out back, just 'drag' rate springs up front and little else.

Thanks for the info, I was wondering because A) i want to get better traction and B) everything i have seen for 15s is 225, 245 or 275. The person that had the car before me put on some cooper cobra radials 235-60-15s ( i can spin the hell out of them in 2nd gear when i punch it at 30-35 mph) and i can't hardly find anything in that size (i would like to stick with that size too, just get a better tire).

I'm a little out of date when it comes to what's available for ten holes at this point, but 235-60-15 in something sticky would be a good idea. When you go much wider than what is intended for a wheel, you wind up with cartoony-balloony side walls and your contact patch is distorted, so you're not getting the rubber to the road properly.

I liked my BFG DRs. They won't last long, but if you're more concerned with stickin' and gettin', then a drag radial is probably what you want.

I know for a fact you can go 245/60/R15 and won't have any problems on 10 holes. 245 is the widest for those wheels though. I'de look into some Mickey T's. Those are supposed to be the best grip for the size.

I want something that is going to give me better traction than i have. Even my dad's cheap fusions grip better than my cooper cobras and they are 225s and were cheap as hell.

Mickey Thompson makes a 235/60/15 drag radial.

How long should i expect them to last? I wouldn't plan on driving with those tires except to and from the track (and of course the 10-13 passes there). Thats why i have the extra set of 10 holes. i would just change them out when i get ready to go to the track and after i get back.

:upthum::upthum: for Nitto 555R 255-50-25

My friend runs them on the rear of his lowered 88 conv. And loaned them to me this weekend for my 86 lowered Capri. First pass ever on the track run a 13.67 et 1/4 mile. I'm buying a set for next year.!!

Lots of room and left the quad shock on. He says he gets over 10,000miles plus track time on a set. Which in MI should last like 3 years

After driving on Nitto's you may never take them off!

sounds good but i didn't see a size on their site i could use with the 10 holes i have. I can't go out and buy different rims either because being in highschool and living on my own means money is tighter than before and will be til graduation in may.

I have 275-50-15's on my 10 holes with a good contact patch.

As do I. They are MT drag radials. They dead hook. They are too wide for the wheels but you can run a low air pressure and the contact patch is excellent. It is temporary till I am ready to put on 5 bolt wheels.
