Is there anything special about this spare?
I found it in a car I'm taking apart and havent ever seen one like it before. I thought it was aftermarket, but it has a Ford stamp on it.

Its lighter, thats about it...and some people use them for front runners on drag cars(often though some tracks don't let you run spares up front due to their low speed rating).

Switch the tires to 165r15's and you have a low buck front runner. ran them on my Capri for a while in the street and at the track.

is there a reason not to run em with the stock spare tires still on em? as far as i know some tracks outlaw them because the wheel doesn't have an inner lip like a normal wheel does...on the other hand i would find another and see what you can get away with

I'm in the beginning stages of my five lug conversion, so I can't use it.
I got ahold of a wrecked 90 GT for the drivetrain and now I'm selling off everything I can to make some $ back. I'm going to sell it, but I wanted to know what I had first.
Someone told me today that it was a Cobra spare. Makes sense, but I wanted check here.
Thanks for the info everyone.

Spares are only temporary tires, that ususally hold a higher pressure and aren't something that should be moving at 120mph @ e/t 12:10 or whatever. You could run it, I've seen people ride on spares for what looked like months but I wouldnt think every non-fullsize is that capable

people might call it a cobra spare or whatever, but it's not that special.. i've heard turbo coupes, convertibles, etc.. have em

These came in a few different cars, turbo coupes being one, and some 87-up gt models. The 85-86 TC style do not fit over the 87-93 11 inch brakes though. While the newer ones from mustangs do. I'm not positive on the 87-88 TC spares though.

87-88 TC aluminum spares must fit over the 87+ V8 11" brakes because they're the exact same calipers, rotors, spindles, etc.. as 87-88 TC's...

87-88 turbocoupes came with steel spare wheels and I think they are 16". The aluminum spares seem to be hit or miss on 83-86 turbo coupes. They do not clear the 87-88 turbo coupe front brakes without a 1/2" spacer. The aluminum spares are super light weight and work great when you put a cheap bug tire on them (165R15) I have heard some tracks won't let you run them but I have never had a problem running them. I drove on them in my 3700 lb 88 TC for most of a summer because I was racing almost every friday and I run them all the time on my Capri. I have heard that there was a 5 lug aluminum spare in some Lincons but I have never seen one. 5 lug second gen RX7s had light weight aluminum spares that have the same bolt pattern as the ford 5 lug for any of you cheap racers like me.
