i was replacing stock 2bl intake on my 79 cobra 302 when an intake bolt broke in the back of the head, i drilled it out and was on last turn of the brand new craftsman tap, when the tap broke in the head #@&! this sucks... i may have to send the head out for service to remove it. i drilled into the tap to remove it but i broke 25 or so drill bits. any ideas on removing one of these? i drilled for prob 4hrs total on that head in one day. with only a small hole to show for it. frustating job. but i have had worse things happen. what type of bit or chislel can i use for this? or just send it to engine shop>

I gave up after I killed several snap-on bits and easy outs. I sent the head off to a NAPA and they charged me 40 bucks to fix it.

almost easier to get a used head from the wreakers. They would have plenty of old 302's their using as boat ancors. You might get lucky and get a pair of e7 HO heads for a cheap upgrade.

Weld a nut to it and remove it.

You can get broken tap removers from the tool truck or tool supply house. They have four fingers that stick into the fluted sides of the tap.

here are a few pics, got the head off, its real clean inside, may have had some work done before, there are copper spacers under the valve springs, i dont think thats factory? and it had fel-pro gaskets on the intake, they reused the bolts , i guess thats why it broke off in head. i got new stainless intake bolts, and ordered new head bolts. i am gonna detal the brackets and pulleys while apart. the saga continues....

A carbide drill will drill out a tap if you can get a good spot in the center for drilling (like a flat spot from an endmill or a spot from a center drill).
