If I take the sway bar off of my 79 Cobra, how much will the handling be affected?

little more body roll but nothing substantial, i never run the front sway bar, removing it really helps transferr weight to the rear tires when launching your car

Just remove it for a trial period and see. Every car will be a little different depending on the condition of all the suspension pieces, weight, etc. For a drag car you will be ok without it and as already posted it will help you on the launch and removes a bit of weight from the front end of the car. For a street car you will want to leave it on the car. It is there for a very good reason. Car companies would not spend money on its design and manufacture if it was not needed.

I have the front bar off my Zephyr, it's okay around corners so long as you aren't trying hard but it rolls over pretty good if you are.

imho leave the bar on. it's like a air bag. it's sits there till a time when you really need it. even in drag cars , something goes wrong it really helps to keep the car under control.

There is another option: install a 4cyl front swaybar. Front end still comes up quicker, you remove roughly 10lbs from the nose of the car, & you still have pretty good handling. That's what I did IMHO.....
