What size are the rear stock speakers in a Fairmont/Zephyr? I know the fronts are 3.5" but not sure of the rears.

In my '79 StaWag, they're 5"x7". My Futura doesn't have rear speakers, but
the mountings up under the package tray look like they'd also be 5"x7".
(or maybe 4"x6"?)

5x7s will sit on or under the rear deck without a problem.

6x8s are just a little too big for the holes to sit on top. They mount fine underneath, if they arent so deep that the interfere with the torsion bars for the trunklid.

6x9s wont fit on the top of the deck IME. You could use some wood under the rear deck cover to support the speakers and mount them on top. 6x9s may interfere with the torsion bars for the trunklid if mounted underneath (mine did anyway).

If you take your door panel off you'll probably find openings for 6.5s in it. All of mine had them (two 80s, one 81, and one 83).

Currently I have 6x9's in the rear. They are monsters to say the least. But I really didn't complain cause they were free thanks to my uncle who was putting speakers in his truck. But I was smart and didn't cut up the rear deck to bad I also didn't cut the metal either. The CD player in it was free as well. Yeah I cut the dash to make it fit, only because the dash was cracked. I plan on putting a new dash it sooner or later, along with the correct head unit. But that will depend on the dash I find. In the rear I plan on using the speaker grills that are shown. They came out of an Aerostar and are a little different then the Mustang style ones. But figured I could make them work.

I thought about the doors but I really don't want to cut my door panels. Another idea I thought about was the kicker panels but then I ruled that out. I'm going to go with the 3.5" up front. And probably 5x7's in the rear.

Speaking of the torsion bars, is there a trick to get them back in place? Mine has been out for a while. I put it back once but it came out and almost hit me in the head.

I've used a LONG prybar in the past to put them back in (in a 69 Impala), those things are wicked when they pop loose too. I am going to change mine out to gas struts one of these days, I've done that conversion in my last mustang coupe and it was MUCHO better than the torsion bars
