i know it should be 7.5 rear end, but what are the stock gears. are they 2:73? previous owner has painted the diff. cover and i was wondering if maybe they changed the gears while they were messing with it. how do i tell if it has stock rear end and stock gears
I have 3 '82GT rearends.. all are 7.5 3:08 trac-lok's

The Official Ford Guide says...
2.73 open rear end was std w/ 4.2 liter V-8.
3.08 open rear end was std w/ the 5 liter V-8.
Traction-Lok was an extra cost option offered with both ratios

Traction-Lok was mandatory/standard with the 5.0L engine, even if it was an extra cost. It was optional with the 4.2L engine.

Traction-Lok wasn't available until '81. It was optional with the 4.2L in '81 and '82. It was mandatory/standard with the 5.0L in '82 and later. It was extra cost in '81 and '82 and no cost in '83 and later.

either way it's only a 7.5, the 8.8 wasn't available until 86. you can make the 7.5 live with a trac lock ( my buddy was running 1 in his low 11 sec ranger ) but as cheaply as they can be had you'd be much better off picking up an 8.8 from an 86 - 93 mustang or turbo coupe if you want rear discs.

Accept the TC has slightly wider axles than other foxes. Also I can't wrap my mind around being able to do a burnout with a standard.

Like a transbrake?

trans brake locks first and reverse so no power is getting to the wheels. Its also only found on auto cars.
Line lock locks the front brakes on so you don't have to use the brake pedal. This keeps you from tearing up rear brakes and also lets you work the clutch and gas without having to worry about the brakes.

make sure you upgrade the rest of the breaks too or you'll have an intersting experiance at your first panic stop

It has discs on the back now, and the front calipers are 87-93's. Gonna use a 94-95 Mustang MC and prop valve.

My 82 had a Trac lok with 3:08's, I eventualy upgraded the rear to a 8.8 with 3:73's, it woke the car up.

Just rev it up to about 4 grand and dump the clutch...it's rather easy! And fun!!
