Cast iron manifolds (not tubular headers), Y-pipe going into a single catalytic converter, then a single mid-pipe, a single muffler, and finally a single tailpipe on the driver-side, with twin chrome tips.

the only thing i can recognize is a muffler. i do know what a tailpipe is, but all that other stuff you mentioned, i have no idea what any of it is. i think i'll just take a picture and send it to you, so maybe you can tell me what they've done to it y looking at it.

Mine is all stock, just as FoxChassis said. You should have a dual chrome exhaust tip (this is the end of the tailpipe that attaches to the muffler and routs over the rear axel and out the back)....if not you are missing. I can take some pictures on Friday if you sill need them.

I believe 79-84 are identical. Here's a shot of my '84 showing everything but the dual-tip part (which is about 8" long.) You can't really see it in the pic but in addition to the catalytic converter Fox Chassis mentioned, there's a small cat on the passenger side of the Y-pipe before it merges into one pipe. The exhaust manifolds (which the pipes connect to in the engine bay) are very heavy-duty looking lumps of cast iron with four ports for the engine and one for exhaust.

I had a thread awhile back on the HP increase switching to true duals on my '84. Fox Chassis came up with a tidbit on the '85 CFI cars which got 15HP going to headers and dual tailpipes (still had Y-pipes.) 10 of that was supposedly from the headers alone. I / we surmised that for the 83-early 85 cars a true dual setup with headers and larger pipes would be worth perhaps 25HP. Even if you've still got the stock 2bbl carb, you should still see around 15HP or so.

That first converter (or is it a resonator?) in the passenger side of the Y-pipe supposedly was new for '84. I know my '83 (July build) didn't have one of those. Looking at the Ford diagrams shows it new for the '84 model year.

The 82 I believe just has a resonator, rather than a muffler (same thing, really, but..)

I just looked under my all original 82 and it does indeed have that smaller "pre-cat" on the passenger side down pipe.

did capris come like that also. my crimson cat has hedman headers and the headers look the same age as my capri.

Yes they did. My 83 Capri was all original and it looked just like the picture above. My Capri also had the resonator before the cat?
Unless the Y-pipe was changed? This car had alot and I mean alot of warranty work done back in the day and exhaust was on the list!

My unmolested CA 82 (SSP not a GT) has the precat in the passenger down tube, the huge converter that goes across under the trans tail shaft, and a small muffler in the tail pipe, with a split tip out the back. As long as this is here, are there any ways to preserve the original exhaust components?
