My advice would be to get a C4 and never worry about breaking the tranny. AODs just aren't reliable enough for the hp you have.

AODs are awesome trannies when built right. Just like anything else. 302 blocks are weak but if you reinforce them right then they last. I have had mine for 7 years and have 15000 street miles on it and now over the years about 400 hundred passes and all of them have been in the 11's. But I do change the fliud every winter and every 2 years I have the tranny gone through and the only thing needing replacing was the pump.

my car will see 90% street duty and 10% track. Can I get away with a mild stall transpak kit and rebuild set with a 1 inch band???

Lentech AOD. I had one built for my 347 Kennebell combo, was rated for 750hp.I safely put 400hp to rear wheels with only 8 pds of boost.Block gave out, tranny still going strong and they will set it up for what ever combo and use you want. These guys are the best at AOD trannys.

This is not an accurate statement although it was a true one in the past. C4's break also.

Many modern trans builders prefer the AOD. Built with the right parts they will hold up very well indeed. Check out the clickclick website already linked for more info.

There are a few guys on that website that specialize in the AOD and build custom valve bodies to your combo specs. My custom calibrated unit is on the shelf in the garage and hopefully by Thanksgiving I can report the results. I think that person is also a member of this forum.

Lentech is a great product but does not enjoy the same rep they had in the past. Some people have had problems after spending big $$$ on one of their units. I think most people do have good success with that company.....just letting you know that it is just a name...not an icon -- meaning that mechanical problems can still happen with anyone's unit.

I personally would avoid any "transpak" kits unless it came from one of the custom builders mentioned, Lentech, or Baumann. These are reputable people / businesses that have built a reputation for good results with the AOD. The reading that I have done on some of the other brand names leads me to believe that my transmission will live a short life with those products inside it. I have 2 particular names in mind but do not wish to run down anyone's product. Do some searching and you will form your own opinion on what brands seem to work better in a real world AOD with better than stock performance.

The C4 is a good transmission but unless you are a hard core strip racer is not the best choice for todays cars. Unless you don't care about gas mileage.

If your car is extensively modified you need to factor in the cost of a rebuild with better internals. With your 347 this may be needed. If your AOD is in good working condition you may be able to get by for a while with just a custom valve body & converter and an auxillary cooler for it.

Good luck with your car.

i dont think a 347 would be a good idea for a daily driver. i mean, just think about it. if this car is going to see 90% street, then look into a basic 306 with mods. that will get you enough power.

thats what im doing, it may not be the best for you, but just consider it.

"Enough power" is a very subjective statement that has a different meaning to everyone. Plastictankr obviously thinks that a basic 306 does not provide "enough power" for him.

His question in this thread is not about power but how to channel it to his 3rd member through an AOD transmission and what is needed to do that reliably. There have been many good responses posted and hopefully he will be able to find the answers he is looking for in them.

Could be true but i've got a 347 that has seen 98% street, just because i don't get to the track anymore like i'd like to and it's running strong. Built in 2003

I am not going to hammer this thing on the street. it is a 347 but stock intake and god only knows what cam. I got this car in a trade and am making it road worthy as a backup car, with once a year "butt-showing" at a ford event at the local track

Hard to go wrong with a aod built right. Had I local guy build one for me that held up to over 560rwhp with no problems and me or my wife drove it all over the place. I actually have an extra, if interested pm me.
