I want to rebuild the 84's carb, or at least work on the accelerator pump and secondaries. (It just cranks an cranks unless I play with the gas a lot, wants to die off idle the first 5mins of driving, an I'm not sure the secondaries are opening all the time.)

Is the 3-1346 kit correct for it? Here's the #'s off the carb:

Ok, it's ordered!

Fix your choke.

A 4180c (or any other Ford carb that I've ever owned) when it's set up right, cold
start procedure is once to the floor to set the choke, then keep yer foot off the
accelerator and crank 'er up. When warm, usually just crank, but sometimes you
need to just crack the throttle a bit. You should -never- have to pump the gas
on a Ford.

When the engine is cold, and you open the throttle, the choke blade should snap
completely closed. Then when the engine fires, the vacuum pull-off should open
the choke blade about 1/4" or so. If someone has disabled the choke, it's likely
because the choke heater is no longer working. Those don't come in a carb kit.

You say you don't think your secondaries are opening. Why? Have you tried
locking them out to see if you're losing power? You will never see them open
just free-revving the engine in neutral.

I haven't played with the choke much. I did look in the carb just after starting it though, and the fuel stream was real weak the first 1/8-1/4 throttle, but seemed better when it warmed up.

I can feel the secondaries open sometimes, but not others (WOT at 3K+ for both.) Some people say you're not supposed to feel them, but when I don't, the power isn't there, so... Haven't tried disabling them.

Ok I've rebuilt the carb but everything looked pretty clean so who knows just how much that helped. The kit instructions said for '83 to set the choke to the 3rd notch from the left, (one notch from where I had it.) I did that an after everything was together it still just cranked an cranked. The butterflies were a little stiff and wouldn't close the whole way, so I adjusted the choke all the way to the left and now the butterflies can close completely. For the past 2-3 cold starts after just two full pumps and a few cranks the engine fired up. With a couple minutes warm-up time, going slow on the clutch and a little more gas during the first few take-offs, it's possible to keep it from dying.

The secondaries are now more consistent - at WOT I can feel them kick in at ~3k RPM. I'm going to order a spring kit (20-13). Is the 20-59 kit correct to convert it to quick-change secondaries?
