My power steering pump had to be replaced and the new one still whines after a week of being driven. I was hoping it would go away. It sounds like it needs fluid, but it is full. Then I heard that fords are notorious for this. Is this true? Should I just go find someone who got rid of their power steering to get one that isn't going to whine?

Quite honestly i've never seen a fox that the power steering didn't whine. I'm even seein Sn-95's and new edges that are startin to whine.
I bought my 1985 GT in '85 and the power steering pump always whined. Still have the original and it whines just as it always did, no more or less. Paul

Ford power steering pumps are kinda hit and miss. I've got a handful of Foxes,
and none of my pumps whine. But if you get a replacement, many of them do.
This is especially true of rebuilts, but factory new ones aren't immune.
Part of it is the plastic reservoir. The Fox pump is internally the same as Ford has
been using since ~1965, but the early pumps were muffled by the steel reservoir
that surrounded them. So with the Foxes, if you get a noisy one, you're going to
hear it more.
IMO, another factor is the fluid. Dexron tends to be more prone to aeration than
Type F. Aerated fluid will make the pump whine.
I only ever use Type F fluid in my Ford pumps...

Yeah my 86 GT did not whine until it was replaced. Everyone know how when something your not use to starts, it's annoying as hell.

I know it's too late for you, but unless a pump was run dry, there's usually no need
to replace it. Seal kits are not that hard to install, as long as you have the tool to
remove and install the pulley.
I've replaced mine (it was whining a lot) for a Ford Ranger one, this one works really quietly

I was always told to turn gently to one side then to the other without going all the way to the end. Let it gurgle for a few minutes then go to other side doing same thing . If go to end it will cause air to lock up and cause the whine noise. Thats how I did mine on my car and it worked fine.

When you install a new pump you have to bleed it to no end. I jacked up the front and turned it from side to side for a half hour to burp all the air out. Then it shut right up.

I used to love rebuild the cII pump when the seal kit was available from ford. The trick is to hone the cylinder of the pump just right with emerey paper, alot of remans don't give a crap if the pump whines or not. It is kind of a "mormal", but iritating thing about this pump.

Just as an aside, the rental Chebby Impala I've been driving around Atlanta for
the past 3 weeks has more power steering pump whine than any of my Foxes.
It's not -just- a Ford thing...

Air in the system causes it. Turn the steering wheel lock to lock with the engine off and the cap removed from the P/S pump reservoir to burp the system. You will need to do this quite a bit.

Another tip- when the front wheels are up in the air and you're bleeding the system by turning the wheels lock to lock ... gradually turn the wheels one direction and then abruptly change directions. If you look inside the power steering pump reservoir, the fluid direction gargles and more air comes out... mine have NEVER wined, but I make sure to use original Ford pumps...

I had to replace it because it was busted after being hit in the fender. I don't fix it if it aint broke.
