Is there a way to verify visually whether or not a car is a real GT? The reason is that after providing my insurance company with my VIN, it comes up as a LX convert, not a GT vert. It has the GT side mouldings, but the car was painted a while ago by 1st owner and the hood sticker and trunk stickers are not on the car? Any idea on where to look?

Before '87, only a few Fox Capri/Mustang models were indicated by the VIN. Pace Car, V6 GLX convertible, 5.0L GLX hatchback, SVO, and GT Turbo and RS Turbos models are all that I can think of right now that can be indicated by the VIN. They either have a unique engine code (SVOs and GT/RS Turbos), a unique unit number (Pace Car), or a unique combined bodystyle indicator and engine code (GLXes).

An '86 GT convertible cannot be differentiated from a 5.0L LX convertible by the VIN. They both have the same bodystyle indicator and engine code. Neither has a unique unit number. So any insurance company database, online decoder, Carfax report, etc. that tells you otherwise is incorrect. Even Ford's own online fleet decoder can't tell you if you car is a GT or 5.0L LX.

Only the Body/Buck Tag or Trim code on the Vehicle Certification Label will for sure. The Body/Buck Tag will be stamped "GT" if such, and nothing for an LX. The GT model has a unique seat trim not available in LXes, and such will be indicated on the VC Label.

Those are GT seats. If you are really worried check the buck tag. It's on the core support right under the bracket that holds the bumper cover to the support on the drivers side.

They could change the seats but not the interior code on the VC Label.

Its a GT based on the buck tag.

But don't tell the insurance company fo fear of raising your rates!

My carrier has my 85 vert listed as an LX also. I purchased it new in 85 so I sure it is a GT.
