for anyone interested in doing this mod to there fox cougar or t-bird... it is VERY labour intensive... here are some pics of what I had to do to make mine fit:
as posted on another board:
well I got the shifter today and pretty much have it fully assembled, the new holes drilled, and the cable hole cut out of the floor. Now I am just waiting for the paint to dry on the plate I made to cover the factory hole, then I will bolt it down and hook everything up...

Then I just have to REALLY modify the console to fit it and make it look nice...

Pics:
here is the factory hole, with the new holes cut and drilled out... had to cut a small section out of the metal console bracing piece, for the cable to pass through..... Im using the factory speed nuts and bolts...

here is a pic of the cover plate I made and sealed to the floor:

another shot of the shifter....

now I have to make a custom console section.... looks like I am going to lose the ashtray, (my coin cup)...

another post:
k I am calling it a night on it right now....
here is how it sits:
I have the console piece it comes with, all trimmed down, now I am going to mold it to the top of the factory pieces to give it a smooth seamless look....

this project is DEFINATLY not for the week... if you like your stock interior pieces, DO NOT put a Hammer shifter in! LOL.

and this is how it sits now:
ok I have the cable all hooked up, but I screwed up the pan gasket so I have to remove the tranny pan again tomorrow and redo that. The good news is the tranny fuild was still nice and red and no burned smell...

and I have the console cover just about done... so far I am liking it....

Progress pics...

Very nice job with that shifter install. My friend's 84 Cougar had a shifter and I know they aren't easy to put them in those cars.

Here are some finished pics:
as you can see I scratched the driver's side a bit, so I will have to redo it later, but I am happy with it for now....

Looks good, looks like it couldn't have been done any better any other way.

ok that didnt last long... I threw a B&M shift kit in the AOD, and screwed it up somehow, so rather then redo it, I yanked it all out and installed a T5. So if anybody is looking to put a Hammer shifter in there '85-88 Bird or Cat, PM me... mine is up for sale...

Three pedals are better then two...
