View Full Version : Convert TC rear end to 5 lug?

I picked up a turbo coupe rear end out of the yard yesterday for $150, 3.55, posi. I also just bought a set of bullet rims off a '01 that I was hoping to use. Now, my question: I know a TC rear axle is 3/4" wider than a mustang, I think I've also read that a SN 95 axle is also 3/4" wider? I'm wondering if I can use the SN95 axles and rear rotors to convert to 5 lug? If not, I have access to the SN95 rear brackets and calipers, I just thought the TC stuff might be easier since all the lines, brackets, etc are still on the rear.
Thanks Guys,
Matt

All you would need is the SN95 axles, rotors and brackets as the calipers are the same. You could also go with ranger driver side axles and cut the stock TC brackets to fit on the backside of the flange and then have the TC rotors drilled for 5 lugs.
Have fun and enjoy having the rear disc brakes whatever you do.

The calipers are not the same between TC and SN-95.
The TC rear axles and housing are identical in width and track to the 94-98 Mustang stuff.
You can't use the SN-95 rotors with the TC calipers.
Either grab all the SN-95 stuff, including the brackets that bolt to the axle housing that hold the calipers, or get SN-95 axles and redrill the TC rotors to 5-lug (you will also need to open up the center bore on the TC rotors to fit the larger hub on the SN-95 axles).
You could use your TC lines/etc with the SN-95 stuff, so no need to change those.
This is all of course dependent on you being ok with the 1.5" overall wider track either set-up will give you over the stock Fox Mustang stuff.

Thanks Guys! That's why I love this forum, no matter what I run into or want to try, someone here has already tried it! I'm going to go thru the 8.8 this weekend, hopefully everything goes well.
Thanks for all your help guys!

I'm going with the '01 17x8 bullet rims, so I think the extra track width will be OK.

There was an earlier thread in this forum that also contained the rotor diameters for the different rear disc brake set-ups Ford used, and that perfectly illustrated why certain rotor/caliper/bracket applications couldn't be used.

Thanks guys! I got everything cleaned up and painted, it all bolts together fine. I'm waiting on my braided stainless lines from classic tube then I'll post pics.

I'd go this route. IMo the tc caliper is beter and i think larger. I know it's larger than the +99 cause I tried putting tc rear calipers on my 2300-k kit but they wont fit without re-drilling the mounts

I have the modded TC stuff currently on my '83, but it will be going bye-bye in lieu of Cobra stuff that I have had sitting on the shelf for months now waiting to install.
On the modded TC stuff, I'd go the route of opening the rotor ID instead of machining down the hub OD so as the wheels would still be hub-centric.
