What are you guys using for brake pads? Does anyone make a performance pad for the stock (well stock but I did the 5 lug conversion way back when - rotors, axles, drums) brakes on these cars?
tks!

Shop price. They are the best there is. Go with new rotors at the same time.

The GranSport says they are for SVO model only. Hawk says they do not make a pad for 86 GT's even though their website says the 263 model will work, but they don't. They are too large and the pattern of the pad is wrong.
Does anyone have a specific pad they have used?

have you thought about upgrading your front brakes to the 87+ V8 setup?

I would go for the professional grade(first on the list), you can pick which ones sound best(i see they dont offer a ceramic pad for your smaller brakes, but they do for the 87+ V8 brakes)

of course, but don't want to get that deep yet. I have 16x8 Ronal R9 wheels that I'd rather not lose so for now at least, I'm going to keep the stock units but I plan to change them down the road.

The Satified pads the tire rack sells for the stock 85/86 front setup are the worst pads I have ever used on anything. I want to go to 87-up stuff on the front of mine with 73mm calipers and some hawks. But probably one of the better pads for the stock setup would be the EBC greens. I ran these on a bmw years ago and loved them. Summit sells them.

FYI, the 87+ parts only keep you from using 14" wheels, they're still 4 lug...if your Ronal 16's are 4 lug they'll fit the 87+ parts perfectly

Beat me to it 82mustang. As he stated, 87+ will still allow you to keep your wheels WHILE giving you the benefit of better braking.

hmmmm.....ok my memory is fuzzy, its been a long time. This car has not seen pavement since 1993.
the setup I have now is an 86 GT w/ the Motorsport 5 lug disc (std 10") front and 5 lug rear axle / drum conversion.
The wheels are 16x8 Ronal R9's. I don't remember right now what the offsets or back spacing is.
At the time, I remember looking into going to larger brakes but i was told the 16x8 would not fit in the front because you had to go to the different spindle and it changed the geometry and that the 8" rim would hit. The 7" I think I was told was ok but I had already bought the rims.
SO...is there some hope? Ideally if i were to upgrade I'd love to go to Cobra brakes (that I understand reqs 17" rims minimum) but if there is some intermediate option were i can upgrade to some later larger Mustang brakes and still retain the 16x8's then I'd be interested.
thanks!!!

Someone will correct me if I am wrong, but I believe later Rangers and the Lincoln MKVII had 11" front rotors that will bolt up to the 87+ spindles and still allow you to use your current wheels.

Go with EBC brake pads The GREEN stuff. Major difference. Not cheap, but worth it.
