Hello everyone I am new to this site and new to the idea that a car that I could work on myself was built after 1980. Well I am trying something new and was wondering how hard it is to rebuild a turbo. I just purchased a 1988 turbo coupe 5 speed thunderbird. I want to rebuild it and install it in the 62 Falcon I am installing the 2.3L 4speed in now. My plans are to lighten the car and install the turbo 5 speed. I am also working on a 63 Falcon that I am istalling a 302 efi 5 speed in. I like to say installing, but should say planning to install. I have the ECU and harness in but thats it. Anyway I will more than likely be asking a lot of questions. The first is the turbo rebuild. Are they hard, any special tools involved? Any good pages or articals on doing this?

Thanks in advance, Neil

Neil,

There are some exact measurements when rebuilding a "turbo" - you are talking about the actual turbo right?

Best to have it done by a turbo specialist or buy one that fits your motor's needs.

62 Falcon Turbo, 5-speed.......interesting, very interesting. I know someone else with the "want" to do the same thing.

Ya your best bet is to call charlie at evergreenturbo.com. He does nice work, mine just came back from being done....

I think a detailed plan would get us all on the same page. If there is nothing wrong with the turbo don't rebuild it. If there is nothing wrong wit the 2.3 motor don't rebuild it. More problems are caused by rebuilds than high mileage motors/turbos.

I have the same car. It has 270,000km's on it with original everything and it runs/drives fine. I wouldn't touch it unless there's a reson to

I am rebuilding a Holset right now due to turbine seal failure (has oil blowby out the tail) and I can tell you this, everything has to be HOMOCLEAN, frogs-ass tight, and dead-on for tolerances or it's bye-bye turbo. Hardest part is the removal/install of the bearings as they are press-ins.

Welcome to the site Neil. A 2.3T 5speed Falcon is definitely different. Be sure to post some pics as you progress with your project and good luck with it.

Could a 2.3 move a wagon even with a 5speed.

I don't see why not, a Falcon Wagon shouldn't weigh anymore than a TurboCoupe.
