I just got a 86gt from a buddy in a trade last week. My buddy painted the car right before I got it and it has a lot of orange peel. It has a ton of clear coats on it though, I was told 6. I was going to start with 1000 grit, then 1500, then 2000, then buff. Does this sound alright, I've never done it before. Also what does everyone recommend for buffing? Should I stick with 3m? Any help would be great.
Thanks guys.

Are you sanding by hand or machine? If you hand sand use a block and stay away from edges and tight rounds very easy to sand throughtry the 1500 then 200 and see how that goes,I like to use 3m polish, but there are other good ones out there. When you polish make sure you dont burn the paint, keep moving, are you using a wool pad or foam? Both will work,I use foam alot but I like wool for differant paints.

I'm going to be sanding by hand. I bought a 3m block and paper today. I'm going to pick up a buffer from the cornwell or matco tool truck this week. I'm not sure what kind of paint was used, I know it was 2 stage base coat/clear coat. Should I just use a foam pad on that. I have a wool buffer already but was going to buy a foam one. How many pads do you think I'm going to need to do the whole car?

Your grit selection is correct, followed bt 3M Finesse-it III.

you will also need to have that small flat block that you use right after you sand a section. Its like a squeege. Your looking for a flat finish, look online for pics to help see what your looking for. Many guys always just sand to much off and right down through the clear. wet it and then squeege it to see what it looks like before sanding. do a few strokes at a time then squeege again just to get a feel. Use a lot of water. some pro's will have a constant trickle hose running while sanding. take your time. slow, slow and slower
