The 86 Capri RS I recently bought had a drivers seat that seemed to recline into the back seat. Per the Board members feedback I decided it was probably the welds broken loose on the steel inners shell.

I've got that seat apart and I can say it was certainly that and more. Apparently the welds on this have broken loose multiple times over the years. That steel shell had been welded on at least three different occasions and had even been drilled out and bolts and nuts put in the tie the pieces together.

The problem is that none of the repairs were ever good enough to fix it. Now there are cracks running through the shell in perhaps 10 different areas. In some places the cracks go through both parts of the shell.

So, at this point I'm looking for a drivers side metal shell for the seat back. It can have broken welds that need to be repaired it just can't have all kinds of cracks through the metal.

There is s PIY yard near me that had an 86 Mustang GT last week. The drivers side seat was still there and the seat back seemed solid but the upholstery was trashed so I left it there. Now I'm regretting doing that. I expect I'll try to stop by that yard Monday to see if it is still available. It may have already gone to the scrapper.

I want to hit that PIY yard first on Monday. If that one is gone then I'll put up a wanted ad.

Thanks,

Don

Made it to the yard this am. That 86 GT was still on line so I did indeed get the drivers side seat. I also noticed that the trim molding for the doors and the passenger side front fender were there so I pulled those. Man I'm spending a lot on this. All that was $18!

When I fixed my seat I welded up all the cracks after getting it straight then I cut a piece of sheet metal to fit inside and welded it in stiffen up the back nicely also acts as reinforcement. If I were you I would pull the covers off the seat you just got and check that one before have ny problems.

Yes,

The plan is to take apart the one I just got and reinforce it. At least this one isn't really broken up like the other one though.

Thanks,

Don
