Well like i have said in a couple of my posts i am starting to put my car back together and back to fuel injection. I FINALLY started working on it again after a case of the broken car blues. I'm back at it and i am more determined than ever to get her going again.
Details:
1986 Mustang Lx Coupe SSP.
Converted to carb. with alot of cut coners.
The interior was trashed and had walmart special carpet with foam insulation glued to it and then that was glued to the floor using, and get this LIQUID NAILS!!!!!!
At least the headliner is new haha.
Also the ENTIRE dash was gutted and everything except for the guage cluster, glove box, and the a/c switch thing was gone. Also all connecters were cut so i can't even put that stuff back in if i wanted without needing a whole new harness for it.
The transmission was out of a 4cyl mustang and was on it's way out when i got it.
The old motor gave out and i have a new one in that i had in another mustang.
Car needs paint but that is the least of my worries.
So Now i have complete harness and ECM, mass air, upper and lower, aeromotive rails, msd dizzy, gas tank, fuel lines, 30 lbs injectors, bbk longtubes and h-pipe, spin tech pro-street mufflers, I took some pony's stripped the house paint off them and painted them charcoal, and bunch of other little stuff. here's some pics of today while i'm trying to put in the harness and ecm and lower intake.
http://img67.imageshack.us/img67/17/img00284lp3.th.jpg (http://img67.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img00284lp3.jpg)
Yes i know i need to clean the engine bay, right now i just wanna get the stuff in and the car running after i know that it's all done i'll take it back out and start on the paint and cleaning up the engine bay. Oh yeah the battery is on it's way to the trunk.

In this one you can see where someone dented the car and i fixed it, I'm a body guy so it was no biggie just haven't painted it yet.

those are just a couple i'll add more as i get farther along and i'll get some more pictures of the interior tomorrow when i'm out there working on it. these pics were taken with my cell phone cause my digital camera was chewed to death by my dog. IF YOU GUYS HAVE ANY PARTS THAT MIGHT HELP AND THAT I NEED OR HELPFUL ADVICE PLEASE POST IT UP AND LET ME KNOW. as always all opinions and criticism is welcome. thanks for looking

Looks like a good starter project. I just picked up a 79' coupe with the original 302 C-4 trans. It needs a little bit of everything.

Awesome... Glad you are putting it back to EFI... I applaud you on that... I will be updating an 85 CFI from carb back to a full EFI soon.
Great job man!

Thanks, this is mustang number 4 or 5 for me so i've had a little practice before hand but it's still a daunting task. The ponys took me like 3 days of off and on work to get them done. I am going to put the Police spot lights back on it but one of the lenses is broken and i'm missing an inside handle. I'll keep you guys updated.

Need your expertise guys. I'm using the Harness out of a 91 5.0 5spd. there are two plugs that i do not know where they go or what they do also there is one on my mustang that i don't know where it goes these three plugs are related but i don't know where to put them here's some pics hope you can help.
I know it's for the TFI but beyond that how do i hook them up?
http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/8972/img00312hw2.th.jpg (http://img262.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img00312hw2.jpg)
anyone with an 86 and original fuel injection take pictures of this area of your car and plug with the hook up. I think i might be missing a connector.
http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/9210/img00314tb2.th.jpg (http://img401.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img00314tb2.jpg)

they might be 10 pin connectors?
86TXSSP
07-28-2008, 12:15 AM
No the 10 pins are behind the intake. These are on the side next to the brake booster. Iknow it's for the TFI module but what wires do i need to cut to hook them up to my old harness and where does it go?
ZachW04Stang
07-28-2008, 12:31 AM
I'm not sure what the connecters a for but on my 87 they connect the body harness to the engine harness.

Go to fordfuelinjection.com , they have a diagram that tells you what the connectors are, and where the wires go.

I use to live in LaPorte... You going to San Jacinto college? I do however live about 45 miles from LaPorte. You are more than welcome to come and check out ALL of the cars.
I will try to remember to take pictures of the area you are asking about tonight when I get home as I have an 86 SSP in my garage that is all STOCK!

They are more than likely for the gauges. Temp, oil pressure, volt and then just dash lights.
Did this harness you are using come out of an 86?
86TXSSP
07-29-2008, 04:15 PM
The harness i'm using came out of a 91 5.0 5spd. A friend of mine bought the whole thing for his 87 to convert to mass air but sold the car and had it sitting there. I got it for free so i can't complain. None of my gauges work anyways except for the speedo that just does what it wants anyway. If i don't need them to turn the car on i'll just leave them be for the mean time. 85 coupe i hate you, an all original 86 ssp, like napolian dynamite says LUCKY!
85Coupe50
07-30-2008, 02:08 PM
Yes I am lucky to have this all original 86 SSP... To bad it didn't have the original center caps still on it when I got the car but the original equipment Goodyear Gatorback tires were still on the wheels. I totally forgot to take the pictures last night and I will put a sticky note in my wallet today to remind me when I get home to get those pictures around the engine compartment.
I think what you are looing for is these top brown connector #31 and bottom connector black #40 in the picture....
http://fordfuelinjection.com/images/harness03.gif
http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/8972/img00312hw2.jpg
I think the gray one is represented by the BROWN and the black one is the black one. The black one will plug into the O2 harness and the other is the signals for the gauges.
I will supply those pictures this evening to be exact.

Yeah i have that diagram thanks. The 02 harness hooks up on the other side of the engine bay so at least now i know that the brown one is for the gauges maybe i can wire it up and begin to have use of the factory gauges again. along side with the autometer gauges that i have mounted in a pod on pillar. still need to know what the black one does tho. don't forget the pictures man i still need to know if the car originally came with two or one of those connectors. Thanks for your help man i'll be sure to buy you a beer when im up there.
85Coupe50
07-30-2008, 09:17 PM
There has to be another connector around there for the gauges.
What is left of the stock connector that should still be in the car?

I still can't get this to look right and get this stuff hooked up. There's also a green connector under the dash next to the 60 pin connector to the computer that i can't hook up cause i don't have that anymore either. I know what that's for but there's nothing to connect it to haha. I'm gonna go crazy just finding all the wrongs done to my baby. I might just have to get a complete underdash harness from an 86 or something. Anyone know where i can get one or does anyone have one along with a fuel cutoff switch and harness? If im gonna do this i might as well do it right and not have to go back and do it a second time and spend more money. Anyone have any of these parts let me know. I'll be checking the market place as well. 85 coupe i might just use you for your car and location of certain things if you don't mind. Again guys thanks and i'll keep you updated.

I found a donor car but i couldn't find an owner we'll see how it goes with that. I'm seriously thinking about just putting the aero interior in it since it'd be easier to hook everything up and a heck of a lot easier to find the pieces as those cars are still around a lot. i'm talking about just the dash and corresponding pillar pieces. What do you guys think. how would i run the light switch with the high beams being that i have four lights instead of just the two that an aero would have. Changing front ends is NOT an option.

Where in south texas are you? I was in san antonio a few weeks ago and there are a bunch of giant junkyards there, and there were at least 10 four eyed cars with complete dash setups still in them. I really think sticking to the original interior will be better in the long run, especially with such a rare car. It's the same story thats constantly preached on this site, but I think it is for good reason. It really shouldn't be too hard to find a complete dash.

Yeah i hear you man but jebus it is frustrating. I'm close to laredo but i'm up in san antonio a lot. I haven't been to JY there cause everytime i go i don't have the time to. Or i'l have the time but i don't have my tools with me. The car was for sale for a long time before i got my second wind and started working on it again because i realized i gave up too soon but now with such a daunting task and incomplete components i feel like dumping 5 gallons of gas on it and burning it up but gas cost to much to do it. Also i start to think that the state of texas only had a handful of DPS mustangs in 1986 and this is a survivor so i've got a soft spot in my heart for her.
85Coupe50
08-06-2008, 09:26 AM
There were a few 86 DPS cars but you are right it's a dauniting task to rewire a EFI setup that was not from that car. It would have been easier to find an 86 harness and add the VSS and MASS AIR to it. then splice this 89+ setup in. I was going through a harness yesterday as I am trimming an 87 converted mass air harness down to a standalone EFI harness for a project and let me tell you its a PAIN because no one has a good picture and good diagrams of the 87 harness. I know I downloaded one a lond time ago but it is on a PC that is now not hooked up to anything.
Good luck on getting the pieces you need and don't swap the dash.

hey 85 if you need some help with the computer let me know. I am kinda computer savvy. But yes it would've been easier to get an 86 harness and convert it but honestly how many do you think are still out there and for a decent price or with someone who isn't a complete tool about what they have?
85Coupe50
08-07-2008, 12:48 PM
I'm an IT guy and wiring is fun for me. Sometimes the diagrams that you find get confusng becuase of how they lay the wires out in those things. I have come to find a great deal of items that make a lot of sence now that I have all the loom off the wire harness and can pull it apart.
Yes, there are very few 86 Texas SSP's that are still in working order or have not been FUBAR'D. i found one at a time and it was really put away hard!

Hey quick question. If i were to seel this car what do you think i would be able to get for it? This isn't a for sale thread but if it were for sale how much could i sell it for. with all the parts that i have for it aswell? I'm thinking about it cause an expense came up and well the first thing to go always has to be the project. So let me know.

not sure... Is the car verified as an SSP? door tag have a 6 digit DSO? any bucktags? If it is and the way it sits maybe $2500.00. I have not had any bites on my 85 running and damn near 100% stock for $4200.00 with everything working but the A/C and speedometer.
86TXSSP
08-08-2008, 02:09 AM
yeah i have the buck tags and what little is left of the door tag is still there. I looked into it a little and believe the car was from brown county or something like that The DSO is out of Houston, harris. so i know it is a ssp. Original black and white shows under the brown in some areas and white shows under the black in some areas little knicks here and there. It's been painted twice so ya it's been a long road for this car and it hasn't been easy for it either judging by what i see. No accidents and stuff like that, it's just been left to get really really rough. I might not have to sell it but if i do well you gotta do what you gotta do.
85Coupe50
08-08-2008, 07:54 AM
Can you post up some pictures of the bucks and the door tag? I wonder if it falls in the range of the DPS VINs for 86. ALL the DPS cars were white to start out with and had the black painted over after the roof, hood and rear deck lid were masked off. Does it indicate Texas on the buck tag? If so it should also indicate hood, roof, trunk/deck lid white remainder black. Good luck if you have to sell. I know the 86 DPS cars are hard to find. There is still a lot of equipment that can be brought to put the car back to as patrolled/In Service.

i'll get some with my phone later. all you said there corresponds with what is on my car. I took the buck tags off cause i didn't want them to get crumpled lost or break off. There is only a little piece of the door tag left so i'll see what i can get.

4th - I FINALLY FOUND SOME INTERIOR PIECES WOOT!!!!!!!!
ok so it's not as a big an update as you guys would expect but that alone was a PITA to do. lol
also still don't know what wires the computer needs to be hooked up to for the power, acc., and ignition. Anyone that knows that PLEASE HELP ME OUT SO I CAN FINALLY START THIS SLEEPING MONSTER! ok maybe it's not that much of a beast but its run a best of 12.91 with the old carb set up so it's not that slow.

Here is a great place to start with the power issue.

OK maybe this will make more sense of it...
http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn109/m_buckmaster/misc/EECIV_power_diagram.gif
All you have to do is pull the wiring harness apart and you will see this main power feed wire and where is goes and splits off... Follow the diagram above and you can add your own furse and relay to it and whamo your EECIV has power!
Here is an example of the relay if you need it...
http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn109/m_buckmaster/misc/relay05.gif
Here is an example of a working layout that may explain the function.

You out in SouthEast Houston yet? There should be a relay already in the wiring harness (actually 2) one is near the EEC and the other is out in the engine compartment part of the harness that is the full throttle A/C cutoff. I will get the diagram of the Ford relay so that you can just wire into that.

Yes, by chance only... I was in the right place at the right time... I actually think it was for sale here and another guy bought it and then sold it to me.

Yeah i started the other day and now am not near the car but send me a picture of the relay. I'll have to get to it when i get a chance next time i'm down. But as it sits right now it's all on scept for the relay everything else is there and as soon as that's on it'll start. well i hope it starts. lol
