I always struggle with deciding where to start for a post like this. So I am just going to go for broke and start from the beginning. We will start with the justification for building this new machine.

Some members here may recall my current 1986 Capri GS (No, I don't actually expect you to..) Well, to say the least, my 86 has issues, a lot of them. While the 86 looks good from a distance, it suffers from many hidden flaws. The largest being the accident damage which lurks below what is left of the new paint. There is rust damage compounding the chassis twist, and all but nonexistent passenger side quarter panel. It has been 5 years since the car was "repaired" and the "new" paint has turned into a rusted bubbled out mess. I frankly don't even feel safe driving it anymore due to the rust and accident damage. But it sure does look good from a distance..

But this thread is not about my 86. The decision was made, a new chassis would found and built up into my dream machine.

The hunt for a new body was far shorter than I ever expected. My only real criteria were, that it had to be straight, it had to be a Capri, and I preferred it to be drivetrain free. The perfect car came up locally for just 500 bucks. It was a 1983 Capri GS. It was sporting a 302 at the time, but that was going to be removed before sale. The only flaw with the car? It had holes in the floorboards. A careful pre-purchase inspection reveled that while the floorboards were shot (due to a clogged sunroof vent more than likely) the entire rest of the structure was 100% straight and solid. I checked and double checked the subframes for any sings of rust, and found none. This car was solid.

After getting the car home, and procuring the resiquite Bubble hatch, we quickly begun the tare down. This car was going to get naked... VERY VERY naked indeed.

Considering the amount of work I've done so far... I am going to save everyone the pain of reading my dribble, and just jump to the more important stuff... The photos!

(Sorry.. I'm not going to paste in 159 image tags ... its just not gonna happen..)

Stay tuned for more details!

What will the dream machines drivetrain be?

What will the dream machines drivetrain be?

I am cooking up a high HP 2.3T for this car. Target power is in the mid 300's which is very doable.

As far as induction goes I will be running Mega-squirt EFI on it, with all of the wonderful custom wiring that goes along with it. The EFI will be running off of a wide-band for 02 measurement, to keep everything in check mixture wise.

There are a lot of decisions left to be made such as Cam shaft, IC & routing, Turbo sizing etc. I do have the rough details outlined though ;)

Moving back the drive train there will be a T5. I need to see what I can do about getting a decent gearset however, since the stock 2.3 gears are quite bad. Out back will be an 3.55 8.8. Since I will be doing a lot of traveling with this car, I decided to go with the higher gears, as with 3.73's and above the motor just turns to many revs for my taste.

Other interesting things under the hood will be the Air Conditioning setup LouThePlumber and I are cooking up. IT should be quite good looking by the time it is all said and done, stay tuned for more details :)

When you need any more welding help, you know who to call! Have you made more progress on it since I was up?

Just a quick update, Progress has been slow over the summer due to me living 2 hours away from the car. I know it looks bad that I haven't made any big update posts, but I promise you the project hasn't been pushed off. I will probably do most of my work during my 2.5 week Christmas shutdown like I did last year.

We are making slow progress on making sure everything is solid and 100% on the floor, and will be moving on to starting the process of filling the 900000000 holes in the engine bay. Since the car is getting a 2.3T with a custom engine harness and EFI, almost every single one of those holes will be filled. I will drill new ones as I need them for mock-up and final assembly.

Once this sheet metal work is done, I expect progress to slowly pickup pace as it will then be moving towards a full mock up before being disassembled for paint. This really is a long term project in every sense of the word.

Your Christmas break is almost here. I hope you get a lot accomplished. I'd like to see it finished and rippin' up the streets.
