A guy I went to school with has a 79 COBRA 302/Auto sitting beside of his garage. I go by his house all of the time to and from work. Well he flagged me over today in my Fairmont Wagon and asked if I was interested in the car. I looked at it and he sold the engine and trans. So its a roller! It has the original hood scoop and the rear wing is a 3 piece wing with 3 settings for adjustment up/down. The car is gray metallic with black interior. The dash and door panels have the COBRA badges on them, it is a factory NO console car. It has the cover on the P-Brake handle. The front seats are high back buckets and came with no headrests. The door handles are close to the floor and the lock buttons are in the armrests. The gauge cluster has green numbers and letters and the speedo is 140MPH and has Ford Motorsport on it. He told me if I am interested in it stop and make an offer. My question is, What is it worth and what would be too much to pay for it?

Very subjective question. For me, without some of the original equipment it would be worth less. If the body is solid I would put it in the $1000-$1500 catagory.

no such thing as an adjustable 3 piece rear spoiler .

homemade or aftermarket maybe? it's most likely a stock one though(79 cobra's had no spoiler stock, right?)

Only the Pace Car in 79 had a spoiler.

We want pic's! Depending upon the condition, I'd venture to say that $500 - $1,500 should bring it home.

It looks like it's a good candidate to be resto-modded! How bad is the rust on the body? Is there a lot? I would offer $800.00.

Whats the story on the spoiler? What is it? And is it a Cobra just from what is in the pics or is it too hard to say? The body is solid, just dings and a scrape on the pass door. Under the car looks good and there is no rust under it from what I could see from sliding under it. He said I could have it for $300 for anyone else it would be $500.

Another Q: Is the front bumper cover a cobra cover? I thought that cobras came with the same one as the pace cars?

79 Cobras had the same front end as the regular cars that year. Check out mine or Pete's (Hissing Cobra) for examples of this. 80 and 81 cobras had the front end like the Pace car and only the Pace car in 79 had a spoiler (for 79 models). You could get a spoiler in the later ones. Oh and for $300, I would get it too.

Edit: Tom, you beat me to the answer! I'll keep mine here too.
The spoiler is definitely not a factory job. That nosepiece is a Cobra nosepiece and also serves as the standard nosepiece for all '79-'82 Mustangs. On the '79 Cobras, there were no rear spoilers and only the standard nosepieces. On the '80-'81 Cobras, Ford used the '79 Pace Car/'82 GT front nosepiece with the foglights, as well as the '79 Pace Car full length cowl hood scoop (the '82 GT's came with the '79 Cobra hoodscoops.)
Here's two pictures of my '79 without the foglights/airdam and without the rear spoiler.

For what its worth I dont think thats a cobra front end. looks like a 79 LX front end to me. I beleive 79 Pace cars and cobras and also 82 GT all have the same front ends. The tag on the core support should have the info you need? As for the rear spoiler never seen nothing like it. but the car looks pretty good in the pics and for 300. you should have it in your driveway. LOL If you dont want it I would donate 500. and take it home. LOL Good luck!

Actually, in 1979 there was no LX model and the '79 Cobras were different than the '80-'81 Cobras in regards to the front nosepiece. They wore the standard units only in '79.

Mick (Foxchassis) or Mike (Negusm) should be able to help you with the numbers. You can also order a Marti Report from www.martiautoworks.com (http://www.martiautoworks.com) and that report will tell you how many were made and which Ford dealer originally sold it.

That car looks really solid from the pics. For $300 you can't go wrong. Heck, on a good day the 140 mph speedo is worth around $120. I would hate to see that car get scrapped, so I hope you can get it.

Thanks! The red bumper cover that comes with the car is actually off of another 79 COBRA! I remember the car sitting in his yard last summer. It met its maked and is now cruising that great autobahn in the sky.:( There was no hope for her though. I barely taped the rockers with my steel toe boot and knocked a hole in it. She started to pull apart at the door and fender when he hauled it off! What a waist!

I stoped and looked at it in good light today.Where the rear seat bolt to the floor pan, its busted like 90% of them are and the toe board has some bubbling so it will need a full drivers side pan. other than than its pretty solid so far.

Well I got back from a fellow coworkers house a few hours ago. Ha gave me a call 2 or 3 days ago and told me he was stripping a 88 hatch mustang and wanted to know if I could give him a hand. So I said sure and I went over this morning. When I got there at 10 or so this morning we moved a jeep off of his trailer and that was a job in its self. Once we finally got the stang on the trailer and across the road to his house from a lot he keeps some cars on we started rip gutting it. We started at 11:30 or so an I left there at around 5:00. We started with a car that needed an engine and trans only it had been laid on its side. When we got finished it was 2 quarter panels a roof and the passenger side floorpan. The rest we stripped off of it. I got the front bumper cover, 4 springs, rearend, fiberglass front bumper reenforcement, header panel, electric fans (dual fan setup), steering column, sun roof storage straps out of the hatch area, the door and hatch seals, and the complete drivers side floor pan toe board and all. I plan on putting the floor pan in the 79 Cobra. The pan is really the only reason I went besides to give him a hand with it.

Remove the rear spoiler from the car and see if you can find a Ford part number on it anywhere; that will give you a good starting point as to finding its birthparents!
