fuel tank cover

Was there an option for this on Mustangs? I was in the garage and never seemed to notice till now, but it looks as if there is a cover around the front of my fuel tank.

the later(85 or 86+ i believe) mustangs use a full plastic skid plate on the tank, the earlier ones are a small rectangle and it should be standard on all models

My 80 Mustang has it and I'm pretty sure the 81 has it too.

Both my '79 and my '81 have small plastic pieces that are held onto the tank by the straps. They're in the front of the tank just like your's. They're not full blown covers like on the later model units.

they are center skids just to make them rust is my guess

They should of came on all the fox cars. Dang tanks get banged up a little and the fuel guage stops reading correctly.
